The road out of Srinagar toward the north is a study in shifting landscapes, moving from the congested outskirts into the sprawling, terraced hills of the Kupwara district.

I have driven this route dozens of times. It is a long pull, typically taking around three to four hours depending on the traffic exiting the city and the roadwork near the towns along the way.

Many people ask how to reach Lolab Valley from Srinagar, and while it is straightforward on a map, the reality is a mix of highway driving and tight, winding mountain passes that require a reliable vehicle.

Driving Routes: The Srinagar-Kupwara Corridor

You will essentially head north out of Srinagar toward Sopore or Baramulla before pivoting toward Kupwara. The route takes you past the outskirts of Wular Lake, and on a clear day, the stop at the lakeshore is a perfect way to break up the drive.

Expect heavy traffic near Pattan and Handwara. These market towns are the heartbeat of the region and can turn a three-hour drive into a four-hour one during peak commuting times.

Benefits of Booking a Private Vehicle

Public transport exists—minibuses run frequently between the main towns—but for a trip to Lolab, we strongly advise against it. You want the flexibility to stop for photos of the apple orchards or to pull over when you see a particularly good view of the mountain ranges.

A private taxi allows you to maintain your own pace. More importantly, it ensures you are in a vehicle with a driver who is familiar with the road conditions, which can change rapidly with the weather.

Cost Estimates for Transport

Expect to pay anywhere from 3,500 to 5,000 rupees for a full-day private taxi hire from Srinagar to the valley, depending on the vehicle type and if you have a return trip booked.

If you are planning to extend your journey to Gurez Valley or return via a different route, confirm the total fare upfront. Always verify if the quoted price includes all fuel and toll costs so you don't run into issues on the road.

Travel Tips for Mountain Roads

If you are prone to motion sickness, take the necessary precautions before leaving Srinagar. The road becomes noticeably windier as you leave the plains near Handwara and head into the valley.

We usually suggest starting your day by 6:30 AM. Not only do you beat the morning congestion in Srinagar, but the light on the mountains at that hour is something you don't want to miss while you are still stuck in traffic.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

How far is Lolab Valley from Srinagar by road?

The distance is roughly 120-130 kilometers. Depending on traffic and road conditions, it usually takes between three and four hours to reach the heart of the valley.

Is public transport available to Lolab Valley?

Yes, local buses and shared taxis run to the main town of Kupwara, but they are often crowded and will not take you to the remote corners of the valley. Private hire is best.

Are the roads safe for small cars?

The main roads are generally paved, but you will encounter patches of construction and narrow sections. A sturdy, high-clearance SUV is always the preferred choice for this route.

Can I reach Lolab and Gurez Valley on the same day?

No, that is not advisable. Both are significant drives through winding mountain passes. You should dedicate at least one full day to each destination to avoid exhaustion.

Do I need a special taxi for mountain travel?

We recommend a well-maintained vehicle with an experienced local driver. Avoid booking the cheapest possible option as comfort and mechanical reliability are vital for these mountainous stretches.
