Where the valley turns into high mountains
Overview
Sonmarg sits at the head of the Sindh valley, eighty kilometres from Srinagar, where the soft green of Kashmir gives way to serious Himalayan terrain. The Sindh river runs through it in silver braids, the peaks on either side hold snow all year, and the Thajiwas glacier is close enough to reach on foot or by pony in an afternoon.
It is also the gateway to Ladakh — the Zojila pass is a short drive beyond, and the new Zojila tunnel is steadily making the route more reliable. For trekkers, Sonmarg is the starting point for the Kashmir Great Lakes trek, one of the finest multi-day walks in India, and the base for Vishansar, Krishansar and Gangabal lakes.
The valley historically closed in winter when the road iced over. That is changing: the Z-Morh tunnel now keeps Sonmarg accessible for much of the season, opening it up as a genuine winter snow destination.
Also known as: Meadow of Gold · Sonamarg
A short pony ride or walk from the main meadow to a glacier snout surrounded by waterfalls.
Sonmarg is the trailhead for India's most celebrated alpine lake traverse — seven days, seven lakes.
Braided glacial water running the length of the valley, with trout fishing and summer rafting.
The 3,528-metre gateway to Ladakh, 25 km beyond Sonmarg, and one of the great mountain roads of Asia.
Ponies are available from the meadow; the walk takes around 90 minutes each way and the final approach is steep.
Grade II–III sections run through the summer and suit first-timers and families.
Seven days from Sonmarg to Naranag via Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Gangabal.
Even going just a few kilometres up gives you an extraordinary view back down the Sindh valley.

Ladakh's second town, on the Suru river between Srinagar and Leh, and the gateway to the Suru valley and Zanskar.
Increasingly yes. The Z-Morh tunnel has improved winter access considerably, but heavy snowfall can still close the road at short notice. We check conditions the day before any winter transfer.
Moderate. It is about 3 km each way with a steep final section. Ponies cover most of the route if you would rather not walk.
Yes, and most people do — it is about 2.5 hours each way. Staying overnight is far better if you want to reach Thajiwas without rushing.
