Overview
About Zanskar Valley
Zanskar is as remote as inhabited India gets. The main settlement, Padum, sits at 3,505 metres, and for roughly seven months of the year the Penzi La pass closes and the valley is cut off entirely — historically leaving the frozen Zanskar river as the only route out.
That river crossing became the Chadar trek, one of the most extraordinary walks in the world: several days on the ice of a Himalayan gorge in January and February, with overnight temperatures below -25°C. It is a serious expedition, not a holiday trek.
In summer the valley opens to vehicles and reveals an exceptional concentration of monastic architecture: Phugtal, built into a cliff face around a cave and reachable only on foot; Karsha, the largest gompa in Zanskar; Stongdey; and Zangla. Rafting the Zanskar through the gorge is among the best river trips in India.
A road from Nimmu via Chilling is progressively improving access, which will change Zanskar considerably over the coming years.
