Overview

About Mansar Lake

Mansar is a natural lake about sixty kilometres from Jammu, roughly a mile long and half as wide, enclosed by low forested hills. It has been a sacred site for centuries — the Sheshnag temple on the eastern bank is dedicated to the serpent deity, and newly married couples from the region traditionally circumambulate the lake three times.

In practical terms it is Jammu's favourite day out: boating, a small zoo and deer enclosure, forest walks and good birdwatching, with Surinsar Lake about forty kilometres away forming the other half of a designated wetland complex. Facilities are modest but the setting is genuinely attractive, particularly in the cooler months.

Why people come here

  • Sheshnag temple

A shrine to the serpent deity on the eastern shore, central to the lake's religious significance.

  • Boating

Pedal and motor boats operate from the main ghat through most of the year.

  • Wildlife enclosure

A small deer park and zoo beside the lake, popular with families.

  • Mansar–Surinsar wetland

A designated Ramsar wetland complex with good winter birdwatching.

Things to do in Mansar Lake

  • Walk the full lake circuit

A gentle few kilometres through forest around the water, best in the cool months.

  • Visit the Sheshnag temple

Small, old and central to local tradition — worth the short walk from the ghat.

  • Come for the Mansar festival

Usually held in autumn, with regional crafts, food and performances.

  • Combine with Surinsar

Forty kilometres away and part of the same wetland system.
