Overview

About Daksum

Daksum is a narrow, heavily forested valley south-east of Kokernag where the Bringhi river cuts through deodar and fir. It is one of the greener and more enclosed places in Kashmir — less meadow, more woodland — and it has a long reputation among anglers for its trout.

There is very little here beyond a few huts, a tourist bungalow and the forest. Walks lead up through the trees towards Sinthan, and the road continues over the pass to Kishtwar when it is open. For travellers who want a couple of hours of complete quiet between Kokernag and Sinthan Top, it is ideal.

Also known as: Dachsum

Why people come here

  • Bringhi river trout

One of the better-regarded trout streams in Kashmir, with permits issued through the fisheries department.

  • Deodar and fir forest

Dense, mature conifer woodland — unusual in a valley better known for open meadows.

  • Gateway to Sinthan Top

The road climbs from here to the 3,800 m pass and on towards Kishtwar.

  • Genuine quiet

Almost no commercial tourism; most days you will share the valley with nobody.

Things to do in Daksum

  • Fish the Bringhi

Arrange a permit in advance through the fisheries department; beats are allocated.

  • Walk the forest trails

Paths lead up both sides of the valley through deodar — take a local guide, they are unmarked.

  • Drive up to Sinthan Top

Around 25 km of climbing road to a 3,800 m pass with enormous views.

  • Camp by the river

Simple riverside camping in summer; carry everything you need.
