Overview
About Lamayuru
Lamayuru sits at 3,510 metres on the Srinagar–Leh highway, about 125 kilometres west of Leh. The monastery is among the oldest in Ladakh, with origins traced to the 11th century and the translator Rinchen Zangpo, and it belongs to the Drikung Kagyu lineage.
What stops everyone, though, is the geology. The valley below the gompa is filled with pale, deeply eroded clay and sediment formations — the floor of an ancient lake, exposed and weathered into ridges and gullies that genuinely do resemble a lunar surface. The viewpoint is signposted on the highway and the comparison needs no explanation.
The monastery holds around 150 monks, a cave where Naropa is said to have meditated, and two annual festivals with masked dances. It is the natural overnight or lunch stop on the drive between Kargil and Leh.

Ladakh
Zanskar Valley
A remote high valley around Padum, cut off by snow for seven months a year, home to cliff-built monasteries and the winter Chadar trek on a frozen river.
Why is Lamayuru called Moonland?
The valley below the monastery is an exposed ancient lake bed, eroded into pale ridges and gullies that closely resemble a lunar surface.
How old is Lamayuru monastery?
Its origins are traced to the 11th century, making it among the oldest continuously functioning monasteries in Ladakh.
Is Lamayuru a good acclimatisation stop?
Yes. At 3,510 m on the Srinagar–Leh road, it is a sensible overnight halt if you are driving up rather than flying in.
