Overview

About Surinsar Lake

Surinsar is the quieter half of the Surinsar–Mansar wetland complex: a compact, deep lake enclosed by thickly wooded Shivalik hills, with lotus covering much of its surface in late summer. Local legend connects it to the Mahabharata, holding that Arjuna created it with an arrow.

There is little infrastructure beyond a boating point and a small temple, which is exactly its appeal. It is a half-day escape from Jammu rather than a destination in itself, and it works best when combined with Mansar.

Also known as: Surinsar

Why people come here

  • Forest setting

Dense Shivalik woodland right to the water's edge, unusual for a lake this close to the plains.

  • Lotus cover

Much of the surface fills with lotus through late summer and early autumn.

  • Ramsar wetland

Designated alongside Mansar for its importance to migratory waterfowl.

  • Mahabharata legend

Local tradition attributes the lake's creation to an arrow loosed by Arjuna.

Things to do in Surinsar Lake

  • Take a boat across

Small boats operate from the main point; the far shore is completely undeveloped.

  • Birdwatch in winter

December and January bring the best variety of waterfowl.

  • Walk the forest edge

Short paths lead into the Shivalik woodland around the lake.

  • Combine with Mansar

The two lakes are forty kilometres apart and almost always visited together.
