Overview

About Lolab Valley

Lolab is an oval basin about twenty-five kilometres long in the Kupwara district, framed by forested hills and watered by the Lahwal stream. It is one of the most fertile parts of Kashmir, dense with rice terraces, apple orchards and some of the finest walnut groves in the valley. Three sub-valleys — Brunai, Kalaroos and Potnai — branch off the main basin.

There are things to see beyond the scenery. The Kalaroos caves, locally called Satbaran, are a series of rock-cut openings with a persistent legend that they tunnel through to Central Asia. Lavnag has a spring and the ruins associated with the Lalla Ded tradition, and the forests above Chandigam are genuinely wild.

Lolab works best as a slow one or two-day detour for travellers who have already done the headline destinations and want something quiet and real.

Also known as: Wadi-e-Lolab
