Overview

About Betaab Valley

Betaab Valley was called Hagan until a Bollywood crew arrived in 1983 and the name never recovered. It sits between Pahalgam and Chandanwari where the Lidder opens briefly into a flat green bowl, with a tributary stream running through lawns and pine-covered slopes rising steeply on both sides.

It is the most landscaped place in the Lidder valley — paths, bridges, benches, a small entry gate — which makes it easy and popular rather than wild. For families, for an hour of photographs, and for anyone who wants the classic Kashmir image without a walk, it does the job perfectly. Walk upstream past the developed section and it gets quieter fast.

Also known as: Hagan Valley

Why people come here

  • The valley floor

A flat green bowl with a stream running through it and steep pine ridges on either side.

  • Easy accessibility

Level paths and short distances make it one of the few mountain spots suitable for all ages.

  • Film history

Named after the 1983 Hindi film, and still one of the most shot locations in Kashmir.

  • Upstream trails

Walk fifteen minutes past the landscaped section and the crowds disappear.

Things to do in Betaab Valley

  • Arrive before 10 a.m.

The valley is quiet and the light on the pine ridges is at its best.

  • Walk to the upper stream

Most visitors stay near the gate; the upper section is far more atmospheric.

  • Combine with Chandanwari

Chandanwari is 9 km further up the same road and the two pair naturally.

  • Bring a picnic

There are only basic stalls inside — the lawns are made for it.
