The summer capital of Kashmir, built around a lake, a river and an old city of wooden balconies, copper-beaters and saffron-scented kitchens.

Budget & Student Trips
Clean, safe, honestly priced trips for students and young travellers — the same destinations, none of the padding.
How we approach it
The thinking behind these trips
A Kashmir trip does not have to be expensive. Shoulder-season dates, well-run guesthouses and homestays, shared transport where it makes sense and a realistic itinerary will get you the same lakes, meadows and snow for a fraction of peak-season rates.
We run a lot of student and college groups, and the priorities there are different: safety, supervision, clean accommodation, predictable meals and a cost per head that works. We are explicit about what is and is not included, because budget trips go wrong when the list is vague.
The honest advice we give most young travellers is to come in late March, early November or midweek in winter. The valley is just as beautiful and costs considerably less.

Eighteen square kilometres of waterways, floating gardens and carved houseboats that have defined the image of Kashmir for a hundred and fifty years.
A 2,650-metre bowl below Apharwat peak with the world's second-highest operating gondola, India's best lift-served skiing and a summer meadow that gave the place its name.
Kashmir's most relaxed hill town, where the Lidder river runs through pine forest at 2,130 metres, with Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari branching off above it.
An hour from Srinagar, a wide alpine meadow cut by a stream that froths white over the rocks — hence the name, the valley of milk.
A quiet pine-fringed meadow south-west of Srinagar, backed by the Pir Panjal and known for horse rides, the Doodh Ganga stream and the Nilnag lake walk.
A manicured river meadow seven kilometres from Pahalgam, walled by pine ridges and named after the 1983 film shot there.
Questions
Budget FAQs
The questions we get asked most about this kind of trip.
What is the cheapest time to visit Kashmir?
Late February to mid-March and the first half of November. Both have good weather, far fewer visitors and noticeably lower rates.
Is it safe for solo travellers?
Yes, including for solo women travellers — Kashmir has a strong reputation on this. We still recommend vetted stays and a local contact, which we provide.
Do you run student group discounts?
Yes. Rates for college and school groups are worked out per head on headcount, season and accommodation standard. Send us the numbers and we will quote.
Can we do Kashmir on a tight budget without missing the main sights?
Easily. Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Doodhpathri are all achievable on a modest budget — the savings come from timing and accommodation, not from cutting destinations.
