Overview
About Dal Lake
Dal Lake is not really one lake. It is a system of basins — Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal and Nigeen — stitched together by channels, causeways and floating vegetable gardens called raad. People live on it. Families farm lotus and nadru on it. An entire economy of shikara-wallahs, flower sellers and copper traders moves across it every day.
The houseboat tradition began in the 1880s, when British visitors were barred from owning land and simply built their homes on water instead. The best of them are still standing: Kashmiri cedar panelled room by room, with khatamband ceilings, walnut furniture and verandahs that look straight at the Zabarwan ridge.
The lake changes character by the hour. At 5 a.m. it belongs to the floating market and the mist. By noon it is bright and busy with shikaras. At sunset the Hazratbal dome catches the last light across the water, and in deep winter the shallows can freeze hard enough to walk on.

Why people come here
The floating vegetable market
A 500-year-old dawn trade conducted entirely from boats near Kaniyar — one of only a handful left in the world.
Char Chinar
A tiny island planted with four chinar trees, built in 1664 and still the lake's most recognisable landmark.
Heritage houseboats
Cedar-panelled boats with drawing rooms, dining rooms and verandahs, most of them family-run for three generations.
Floating gardens
Hand-built rafts of weed and soil where growers raise tomatoes, cucumbers and the prized nadru lotus stem.
Things to do in Dal Lake
Book the 5 a.m. floating market shikara
You need to leave the ghat by 4:45. It is cold, it is dark, and it is the best hour on the lake.
Stay a night on a houseboat
Choose a deluxe-category boat with a hammam or electric heating if you are travelling between November and March.
Paddle to the lotus beds in July
Ask your boatman for the Hazratbal-side channels where the lotus grows thickest.
Shop from the water
Saffron, papier-mâché and shawl sellers come alongside your shikara. Bargain gently — and firmly.
Photographs
Dal Lake across the seasons
Open-licence photography so you can see what the place actually looks like at different times of year — not a retouched brochure.
Spring and summer
July and August bring vast pink lotus beds near the Hazratbal side — the single best time for photographs on the water.
Autumn and winter
Shikaras still run on cleared channels. During Chillai Kalan the margins ice over and the lake goes silent.

Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden
Asia's largest tulip garden opens for roughly twenty-five days each spring, with seventy varieties terraced between the Zabarwan hills and Dal Lake.
How much does a shikara ride cost?
Government-notified rates are displayed at the ghats and a standard one-hour ride is modest. We include pre-arranged shikara time in most Srinagar itineraries so there is nothing to negotiate on the spot.
Can you stay on Dal Lake in winter?
Yes. Deluxe houseboats run bukharis or electric heating and are genuinely cosy. Snow on the lake is one of the most beautiful sights in India.
Is the floating market worth waking up at 4 a.m.?
If you care about photography or about seeing the real working lake, absolutely. If not, a sunset shikara covers the scenery just as well.
