Overview
About Chandanwari
Chandanwari is sixteen kilometres above Pahalgam at the head of the motorable road, where the Lidder comes down steeply from the Sheshnag basin. Its reputation rests on two things: the snow bridges that form across the river each winter and often survive into June, and its role as the formal starting point of the Amarnath yatra each summer.
For ordinary visitors it is a short stop — a snow field, a river, a few stalls selling tea and gumboot hire, and the serious ridgelines of the upper Lidder closing in. For pilgrims and trekkers it is the gateway to Pissu Top, Sheshnag and the cave itself.
Also known as: Amarnath Yatra base

Things to do in Chandanwari
Visit in April or May for snow
This is when the snow bridges are at their most impressive and accessible.
Hire gumboots at the base
Cheap, available on the spot, and much better than ruining your shoes in slush.
Walk up towards Pissu Top
Even a short way up the yatra trail gives a dramatic view of the upper valley.
Avoid peak yatra days
If you are not on pilgrimage, check the yatra calendar — movement can be heavily restricted.
