Overview

About Kokernag

Kokernag takes its name from the shape of the spring system — kuker, meaning cock, for the way seven outlets spread like a claw across the hillside. It is the largest freshwater spring in Kashmir and the water has long been credited with digestive and medicinal properties.

Around it the state has built one of the valley's better botanical gardens: terraced beds, a substantial rose garden, mature chinar and walnut, and water channels running down through the whole site. There is also a trout farm nearby and a small Mughal-era resthouse. It is an easy, pleasant hour and a natural companion to Achabal and Verinag.

Also known as: Papashudan Nag
