Overview
About Nigeen Lake
Nigeen is joined to the Dal by a narrow channel but feels like a different place entirely. It is deeper, the water is noticeably clearer, and the shoreline is lined with willow and poplar rather than hotels. Locals call it Nageen — the jewel in the ring — for the band of trees that encircles it.
Because it sits away from the Boulevard, Nigeen draws a slower kind of visitor. The houseboats here tend to be larger, older and more private, and the evenings are genuinely quiet. It is also the only part of the lake system where swimming is common in summer, and where you will find Kashmir's small but committed water-sports scene.
For honeymooners and anyone staying more than two nights in Srinagar, Nigeen is usually our first recommendation.

The Mughal emperors built their idea of paradise into the hillside above Dal Lake — twelve terraces, running water and chinar avenues still standing four hundred years on.
A vast freshwater lake north of Srinagar, fed by the Jhelum, ringed by fishing villages and critical for the valley's birdlife and flood control.
Questions
Nigeen Lake FAQs
Something not covered? Ask us directly — we answer every message personally.
Is Nigeen better than Dal Lake?
It is quieter, cleaner and more private, but further from restaurants and shopping. We usually suggest Nigeen for honeymoons and longer stays, the Dal for short first visits.
Can you swim in Nigeen Lake?
Locals do, in summer, in the deeper central section. Always swim from a boat or the club jetty rather than the reeded edges.
How far is Nigeen from Srinagar airport?
About 21 km, or 35–45 minutes depending on city traffic.
