Overview
About Pahalgam
Pahalgam began as a shepherds' village — the name means exactly that — and grew into the valley's most comfortable hill station without losing much of its character. The Lidder river runs straight through it, cold and loud, and the town is pressed between pine-covered ridges with the Kolahoi glacier somewhere above.
Most of the pleasure is in the side valleys rather than the town itself. Aru, twelve kilometres upstream, is a meadow village and the trailhead for the Kolahoi and Tarsar–Marsar treks. Betaab Valley, seven kilometres out, is the picture-postcard one — lawns, river, pine and mountain wall. Chandanwari, sixteen kilometres up, holds snow into June and marks the start of the Amarnath yatra route.
Pahalgam also has the better part of Kashmir's golf, angling and horse-riding. It is the one destination in the valley where two nights feels short rather than long.

Why people come here
Betaab Valley
A river meadow walled by pine and rock, named after the Bollywood film shot there in 1983.
Aru Valley
A high meadow village 12 km upstream and the gateway to the Kolahoi glacier and Tarsar–Marsar treks.
Chandanwari
At 2,895 m, the start of the Amarnath yatra, with snow bridges over the Lidder lasting into June.
The Lidder river
Fast, cold and full of brown trout — Kashmir's best angling and a fine summer rafting run.
Things to do in Pahalgam
Do the three valleys in one day
Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari are all on the same local taxi circuit — allow a full day and start early.
Fish for trout on the Lidder
Permits are issued by the fisheries department; beats are allocated and well managed.
Ride to Baisaran
A meadow above the town often called 'mini Switzerland', about an hour on horseback.
Walk the riverside to Ganeshbal
A flat, easy path along the Lidder that most visitors never bother with.

How many days should I spend in Pahalgam?
Two nights. One day for Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari, and a second for Baisaran, the river walks or fishing.
Why can't I take my own car to Betaab Valley?
Local regulations reserve the side-valley routes for registered union taxis. It is a fixed-rate system and we arrange it in advance so there is no haggling.
Is Pahalgam good in winter?
Very. It gets proper snow, has far fewer visitors than Gulmarg and the pine forests under snow are beautiful. Some upper roads close temporarily after heavy falls.
