The summer capital of Kashmir, built around a lake, a river and an old city of wooden balconies, copper-beaters and saffron-scented kitchens.

Family Holidays in Kashmir
Short drives, comfortable hotels, snow the children can actually play in and an itinerary that does not fall apart when someone needs a nap.
How we approach it
The thinking behind these trips
Family trips to Kashmir fail for predictable reasons: too many destinations, too much driving, hotels chosen on photographs rather than inspection, and nobody thinking about what a six-year-old or a seventy-year-old actually needs at 2,600 metres.
We plan around those constraints instead of ignoring them. Drives are capped at a comfortable length, hotels are chosen for accessible rooms and reliable heating, and every day has a fallback if the weather turns. Betaab Valley and the Mughal gardens suit all ages; Thajiwas by pony works for grandparents and children alike; the Gulmarg gondola gives you snow without a trek.
If your group spans three generations, tell us. It changes almost every decision we make, and it is the kind of thing we plan well.
What we take care of
Exact inclusions depend on your dates and standard of stay — these are the things we build into every trip of this kind.
Short, sensible drives
No day with more than a few hours in the car, and rest stops built into every transfer.
Family-ready accommodation
Connecting or triple rooms, reliable heating, lifts where it matters and kitchens that cook plain food on request.
Age-appropriate activities
Gondola instead of trekking, pony rides instead of climbs, gardens instead of glaciers where it makes sense.
A local contact on call
One person who knows your itinerary, reachable at any hour for the whole trip.

Eighteen square kilometres of waterways, floating gardens and carved houseboats that have defined the image of Kashmir for a hundred and fifty years.
The Mughal emperors built their idea of paradise into the hillside above Dal Lake — twelve terraces, running water and chinar avenues still standing four hundred years on.
A 2,650-metre bowl below Apharwat peak with the world's second-highest operating gondola, India's best lift-served skiing and a summer meadow that gave the place its name.
Kashmir's most relaxed hill town, where the Lidder river runs through pine forest at 2,130 metres, with Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari branching off above it.
A manicured river meadow seven kilometres from Pahalgam, walled by pine ridges and named after the 1983 film shot there.
A glacial valley at 2,730 metres on the road to Ladakh, surrounded by snow peaks, braided rivers and the walk-in Thajiwas glacier.
An hour from Srinagar, a wide alpine meadow cut by a stream that froths white over the rocks — hence the name, the valley of milk.
Questions
Family FAQs
The questions we get asked most about this kind of trip.
Is Kashmir safe for families with small children?
Yes. Tourist areas are well frequented and Kashmiri hospitality towards children is genuinely exceptional. We track local conditions daily and will always tell you honestly if anything needs rerouting.
Will my parents manage the altitude?
Srinagar at 1,585 m is no problem for most people. Gulmarg's second gondola phase reaches nearly 4,000 m and we often suggest skipping it for older travellers — Phase 1 gives most of the experience.
What is the best time for a family trip?
April to June and September to October. July and August are fine but busier. December to February is wonderful for snow but hard work with very young children.
Can you arrange vegetarian or Jain food?
Yes, throughout. We brief every hotel and driver in advance rather than leaving it to chance.
