Overview

About Manasbal Lake

Manasbal is about thirty kilometres north of Srinagar and roughly thirteen metres deep, which makes it the deepest lake in Kashmir and one of the clearest. Walter Lawrence called it 'the supreme gem of all Kashmir lakes' in 1895, and remarkably little has changed since.

In July and August the lake carries one of the largest lotus blooms in the valley — a solid field of pink across the southern shallows. On the northern shore sits Jarokha Bagh, a terraced garden built by Nur Jahan in the 17th century, and above it the ruins of the Darogabagh fort.

It is also one of the best birdwatching lakes in the region, with large wintering populations of pochard, coot, mallard and grebe. For travellers who find Dal Lake too busy, this is the alternative.

Also known as: Supreme gem of all Kashmir lakes

Why people come here

  • Summer lotus field

One of the densest lotus blooms in Kashmir, at its best through July and August.

  • Jarokha Bagh

A small terraced Mughal garden on the northern shore, built under Nur Jahan.

  • Birdlife

A designated important bird area with major wintering populations of diving ducks.

  • Clear, deep water

The deepest lake in Kashmir, with visibility far better than the Dal.

Things to do in Manasbal Lake

  • Row through the lotus in July

Local boats go right into the bloom; mornings are calmest and best for photographs.

  • Walk up to the Darogabagh ruins

A short climb above the garden gives the full sweep of the lake and the Ganderbal plain.

  • Birdwatch from the northern shore

Bring binoculars between November and February for pochard, coot, mallard and great crested grebe.

  • Combine with Wular Lake

Asia's largest freshwater lake is another 25 km north and makes a natural pairing.
