Overview

About Wular Lake

Wular is on a different scale to the Dal. Depending on the season it covers between thirty and two hundred square kilometres, making it one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia and by far the largest in India's north. It is fed by the Jhelum and acts as the valley's natural flood basin.

It is a Ramsar site and one of the most important bird habitats in the western Himalaya, with huge wintering populations of waterfowl. For visitors, the attractions are the Watlab viewpoint and Baba Shukruddin shrine on the western shore, the fishing villages around Bandipora, and the ruins of Zaina Lank — an artificial island built by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin in the 15th century.

Facilities are minimal, so this is a half-day stop rather than a stay. The sunsets from Watlab, however, are among the best in Kashmir.

Also known as: Wullar

Why people come here

  • Sheer scale

Up to 200 sq km at high water — the horizon on Wular is genuinely open water.

  • Watlab and Baba Shukruddin

A hillside shrine on the western shore with the best panoramic view of the lake.

  • Ramsar bird habitat

Major wintering grounds for pochard, teal, mallard, greylag goose and many more.

  • Zaina Lank

The remains of a 15th-century artificial island built by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin.

Things to do in Wular Lake

  • Watch sunset from Watlab

Drive up to the shrine on the western shore for the full sweep of the lake.

  • Take a boat from Bandipora

Local fishermen will take visitors out; agree the price and duration beforehand.

  • Birdwatch in December and January

Bring binoculars — the wintering flocks here are on a scale you will not see elsewhere in the valley.

  • Pair with Manasbal

Manasbal Lake is 25 km south and the two make a natural half-day circuit.
