Overview

About Kargil

Kargil sits at 2,676 metres on the Suru river, almost exactly halfway along the Srinagar–Leh highway, and is the natural overnight halt on that drive. It was an important Silk Route trading post, and the population is largely Balti and predominantly Shia Muslim, giving the town a distinctly different character from Buddhist Leh.

Most travellers see only the highway, which is a pity. South of town the Suru valley runs beneath the 7,000-metre twins of Nun and Kun — among the most spectacular and least visited valleys in the Indian Himalaya — and continues towards Rangdum and the Penzi La pass into Zanskar.

The Kargil War Memorial at Dras, sixty kilometres west, commemorates the 1999 conflict and is visited by almost everyone travelling this road. Dras itself is reputed to be the second-coldest inhabited place on earth.

Also known as: Kargil Town

Why people come here

  • Kargil War Memorial, Dras

A moving memorial to the 1999 conflict beneath the Tololing and Tiger Hill ridges.

  • Suru Valley

A green river valley below the 7,135 m Nun and 7,077 m Kun peaks — one of the Himalaya's great overlooked drives.

  • Rangdum

A remote plateau monastery between Suru and Zanskar, surrounded by glaciers.

  • Balti culture

Language, food and architecture distinct from both Kashmir and Buddhist Ladakh.

Things to do in Kargil

  • Visit the Dras war memorial

Sixty kilometres west of Kargil, with the battle ridges visible directly above.

  • Drive the Suru valley

Towards Panikhar and Parkachik for close views of Nun and Kun.

  • Continue to Rangdum

A long, rough and extraordinary drive towards Zanskar.

  • Break the Srinagar–Leh journey here

Attempting the full 418 km in one day is possible but a poor idea.
