Overview
About Bangus Valley
Bangus is an enormous oval meadow — around three hundred square kilometres in total, split into Bod Bangus, the greater valley, and Lokut Bangus, the lesser. It sits at roughly 2,400 metres in the Kupwara district near the Line of Control, enclosed on all sides by forested ridges, and it is almost entirely undeveloped.
What you get is grassland of a kind that does not exist elsewhere in Kashmir: open, rolling, treeless in the middle and ringed with fir. Gujjar and Bakarwal herders bring flocks up in summer and the valley fills with temporary settlements. There is no hotel, no shop and very little phone signal.
Access has improved in recent years and the government has begun promoting Bangus carefully as an offbeat destination. Go now, with a good local operator, before that changes.
Also known as: Bod Bangus · Lokut Bangus
Why people come here
Bod Bangus
The greater bowl — kilometres of unbroken grassland ringed by fir-covered ridge.
Gujjar and Bakarwal summer camps
Pastoral communities bring sheep, goats and horses up for the short grazing season.
Complete absence of development
No hotels, no shops, almost no signal — one of the last places in Kashmir like this.
Night skies
With no light pollution for fifty kilometres, the stargazing is exceptional.
Things to do in Bangus Valley
Camp overnight
The only way to really see it. Operators run fly camps in July and August.
Walk between the two bowls
A gentle ridge separates Bod and Lokut Bangus; crossing it takes about an hour.
Photograph at golden hour
Low light across open grassland with forest ridges behind is the shot everyone comes for.
Sit with the herders
If invited, accept the tea. The Gujjar and Bakarwal hospitality here is remarkable.
