I have spent many mornings driving toward the Zabarwan foothills, and the key to a good trip is the transition from the city’s chaos to the park's absolute calm.
Knowing how to reach Dachigam National Park from Srinagar is usually the first question I get from travelers planning their wildlife excursion. While the distance isn't massive, the road conditions and the need for a punctual start make your choice of transport important.
This is not a place you want to rush to in a public bus. To see the wildlife, you need to arrive early, and having a reliable vehicle waiting at your door is the difference between a successful morning and a frustrating one.
The Best Way to Travel from Srinagar
The most efficient way to reach the park is by private vehicle. You are looking at a drive of roughly 20 to 25 kilometers from the city center, typically taking 45 to 60 minutes depending on which part of the city you are staying in.
The route takes you past the iconic Shalimar and Nishat gardens. It is a scenic drive, but in the early morning, your focus should be on getting through the gates before the wildlife retreats into the thicker forests.

Distance and Expected Transit Times
The distance is deceivingly short. Because the park is nestled in the foothills, the road becomes narrower and more winding as you approach the entrance.
Do not budget for exactly 45 minutes; always add a 15-minute buffer. If you are staying on the far side of the city, such as near the airport or in the newer residential areas, your transit time could push closer to 75 minutes. Always account for local traffic, which builds up quickly after 8:00 AM.

Private Car vs Local Taxi
You have options here. Many standard local taxis are available in Srinagar, but for a trip to a sensitive wildlife zone, a dedicated rental is superior.
With a private hire from a known operator, you get a driver who knows the specific entrance procedures and where the best drop-off points are. Local taxis might drop you at the main gate, but a knowledgeable driver will get you closer to the starting point of the forest trails, saving you a walk.

Why We Recommend Pre-Arranged Transport
When you work with a service like ours, the transport is part of a package. We ensure your driver has the permit documentation copies in the car and knows to arrive at your hotel by 6:00 AM sharp.
This removes the need to negotiate prices at the last minute or rely on apps that may not have drivers available in the remote foothills that early in the morning.
Before you book
Getting the transport right is the foundation of a successful day at the park. By booking a private car, you eliminate the stress of navigating the morning traffic and ensure you arrive with enough time to maximize your chance of seeing the local wildlife.
We are here to make your journey as smooth as possible. If you need help coordinating a vehicle for your visit, feel free to reach out and let us handle the logistics.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
How far is Dachigam National Park from Srinagar?
It is roughly 22-25 kilometers from the city center. While the distance is short, the terrain change and traffic mean you should allow at least an hour for the drive.
Can I book a cab on the spot for my visit?
While possible, it is risky. Finding a reliable driver willing to drive into the foothills at 6:00 AM is difficult to coordinate on the morning of your trip. We highly recommend booking at least 24 hours in advance.
