The drive from Srinagar towards Lolab is a transition from the bustle of the city to the sudden, heavy calm of the North Kashmir frontier. I have made this trip dozens of times, often leaving as the first light hits the Zabarwan range, and the road changes character entirely as you clear the outskirts of the city.

To understand how to reach Lolab Valley from Srinagar, you must first accept that this is not a high-speed highway journey. You are moving through one of the most interesting and geographically complex parts of the region. Whether you are driving yourself or hiring a car, the route requires patience, as the road conditions vary significantly once you turn off the main highway towards Kupwara.

Road Routes and the Journey North

The most common route takes you out of Srinagar and onto the highway heading toward Baramulla, eventually turning off at the junction for Handwara and Kupwara. It is a drive of roughly 120 to 140 kilometres depending on your exact destination within the valley, such as Sogam or Krusan.

The first section of the road is wide and well-maintained. However, as you approach Kupwara and begin the climb or descent into the Lolab basin, the road narrows. You will encounter local traffic, tractors, and the occasional herd of sheep that take priority. I always suggest leaving early, around 7:00 AM, to beat the congestion at the smaller market towns along the way.

Estimated Travel Times and Distances

Expect to spend between 4 to 6 hours on the road. Do not let the distance fool you; 130 kilometres in this terrain is not a 2-hour drive. The average speed drops significantly once you leave the main highway.

During spring, the roads can be slippery due to snowmelt, and in summer, they are dusty. If you are travelling in late March or April, give yourself an extra hour for potential road work or local closures that are common as the winter recedes.

Public Transport vs Private Taxi Options

Public transport exists in the form of shared Sumos that run from Srinagar’s Parimpora bus stand toward Kupwara. From the Kupwara main town, you will have to find a local connection to reach the interior villages of Lolab. It is inexpensive, but it is not comfortable, and it is rarely efficient for a visitor carrying luggage.

For most, a private taxi is the only logical way to go. By hiring a vehicle for the day, you get the freedom to stop at the Wular Lake viewpoints or grab tea in Handwara without worrying about missing a departure. It is a far more reliable method to ensure you arrive at your guest house before sunset.

What to Expect on the Journey

As you push past Handwara, the landscape opens up. The architecture changes, and the density of the villages becomes more apparent. The last stretch of the journey involves winding roads that climb gently through forest cover.

Keep your eyes peeled for the transition in vegetation. The transition from the flat plains to the forest-fringed slopes of Lolab is one of the best parts of the drive. It is a quiet, meditative journey, especially if you can convince your driver to keep the windows down and the music off.

Preparation Checklist Before You Depart

Before leaving Srinagar, check your fuel levels. While there are petrol pumps in Kupwara, they can be crowded or face supply shortages. Start with a full tank.

Pack snacks and water. While there are shops, you do not want to stop for supplies when you could be moving toward your destination. Most importantly, ensure your driver is clear on your exact destination in Lolab, as many locals refer to specific villages rather than just the valley as a whole.

Before you book

Getting to Lolab is a journey in itself, one that peels back the layers of Kashmiri life as you head further from the capital. It requires a bit of logistical planning, but the effort is rewarded the moment you reach the open, green pastures of the valley floor.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Can I take a bus from Srinagar to Lolab?

There is no direct bus to the heart of Lolab. You can take a bus to Kupwara town, but you will need to negotiate a local taxi or shared jeep to reach your final village destination.

Is the road to Lolab well-paved?

The main arterial roads are paved, but as you go deeper into the valley, you will encounter sections that are patchy, narrow, or gravel-heavy.

What is the best time of day to start?

I strongly suggest departing by 7:00 AM. This ensures you navigate the crowded market areas during off-peak hours and reach your destination with daylight to spare.
