The rumble of the night express pulling out of New Delhi railway station marks the beginning of one of India's most dramatic landscape transitions. In less than twenty-four hours, you shift from the dust and concrete of the northern plains through the tunnel networks of Jammu and up into the snow-capped bowl of Kashmir.

Many travellers ask how to reach gulmarg from delhi by train, assuming there is a direct rail link all the way to the ski station. In reality, the journey is a multi-stage relay combining premier express railways, highway taxi transfers, and a final steep mountain climb.

We coordinate these connections daily for clients arriving from across the country. Understanding each leg of the route prevents costly delays, missed connections, and confusion at busy transit hubs.

Can You Reach Gulmarg Directly by Train?

The short answer is no. There is currently no railway station in Gulmarg, nor are there tracks running across the high-altitude mountain passes into the inner valley.

The Indian railway network terminates further south. Your train journey will stop either at Jammu Tawi or at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station in the foothills.

From those railheads, the remainder of the journey must be completed by road via Srinagar and Tangmarg. Planning this transition correctly is essential for a smooth holiday.

  • No direct rail link exists to Gulmarg or Srinagar.
  • Trains terminate at Jammu Tawi or Katra.
  • Final 200+ kilometres require private or shared road transport.

Step 1: Express Trains from Delhi to Jammu or Katra

Your journey begins in Delhi at either New Delhi (NDLS) or Old Delhi (DLI) station. Several overnight and early morning trains make the run north toward Jammu Tawi (JAT) or Katra (SVDK).

Popular choices include the Rajdhani Express or the Jammu Mail, both offering reliable schedules and comfortable sleeper berths. The journey takes roughly 8 to 11 hours depending on the specific train.

Boarding an overnight train is the most efficient method, letting you sleep through the plains and wake up as the tracks approach the foothills of the Shivalik range.

Choosing Between Jammu Tawi and Katra

Jammu Tawi is the larger transport hub with more frequent taxi availability heading toward Srinagar. Katra is slightly closer to the mountain roads but caters heavily to pilgrimage traffic.

We generally recommend booking your train ticket all the way to Jammu Tawi as it simplifies the logistics for securing a reliable highway cab.

Step 2: Shared Versus Private Taxi Transfers to Srinagar

Upon stepping off your train at Jammu Tawi, you emerge into a busy station forecourt. Here you must transition to the road journey north along National Highway 44 toward Srinagar.

You can choose between shared Sumo cabs or pre-booked private tourist vehicles. Shared cabs are inexpensive but cramped, especially with heavy luggage or ski equipment.

A private cab booked through a local operator gives you control over rest stops, handles luggage securely, and ensures your driver is experienced with mountain highway conditions and tunnel regulations.

Step 3: Ascent from Srinagar to Gulmarg Bowl

After reaching Srinagar—often stopping for a night on a houseboat or hotel—you begin the final leg up to the mountain station. This final stretch covers roughly 50 kilometres and takes about two hours.

The road climbs steadily past saffron fields in Pampore, flat apple orchards, and the bustling market town of Tangmarg before entering the pine forests.

During winter months, local authorities mandate chain-tyre cabs from Tangmarg onwards. Your driver will pull over at the designated cooperative stand to fit heavy iron chains around the tyres before tackling the final icy switchbacks.

Total Travel Duration and Cost Comparison

Assembling this multi-stage journey requires factoring in both time and financial investment. The train segment from Delhi to Jammu is economical, typically ranging from 1,200 to 3,500 rupees depending on your class of travel.

The private taxi transfer from Jammu up to Srinagar and onward to Gulmarg represents the larger share of the transit budget, ensuring comfort and safety across mountain passes.

In total, expect the entire transit from Delhi to your Gulmarg hotel to take between 20 to 30 hours door-to-door, including the necessary overnight stop in Srinagar to break up the arduous road journey.

  • Train segment (Delhi-Jammu): 8-11 hours, budget-friendly.
  • Srinagar stopover: Recommended overnight rest to prevent exhaustion.
  • Mountain ascent (Srinagar-Gulmarg): 2-3 hours via Tangmarg.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Is there a direct train from Delhi to Gulmarg?

No, trains only go as far as Jammu Tawi or Katra in the foothills. The remainder of the journey to Gulmarg must be completed by road via Srinagar and Tangmarg.

How long does the train journey from Delhi to Jammu take?

Express and Rajdhani trains from Delhi to Jammu Tawi typically take between 8 and 11 hours, with overnight services being the most popular choice for travellers.

Can I get a direct taxi from Jammu railway station to Gulmarg?

While drivers will offer direct rides, it is a punishing 10 to 12-hour continuous mountain drive. We strongly recommend breaking the journey with an overnight stop in Srinagar.

What happens to the road transport during winter snow?

National Highway 44 can experience temporary closures due to landslides or heavy snow. Furthermore, cars must fit tyre chains at Tangmarg to ascend safely to Gulmarg during winter months.

How much does the complete transit cost?

Costs vary based on train class and whether you choose private or shared cabs. Train tickets range from 1,200 to 3,500 rupees, while private cab hires for the full mountain transfer range higher depending on vehicle type.
