The air in Gulmarg during July feels entirely different from the heavy, humid heat of the plains.
When we visit in mid-summer, the meadows are at their absolute greenest. It is a time for walking rather than skiing, and the landscape is dotted with wildflowers that you just don't see at other times of the year.
Many travellers ask us if July is a good time to visit. The answer is yes, provided you know that this is also when the mountain weather can shift from brilliant sunshine to a heavy mist in the span of an hour. Let’s talk about how to make the most of it.
What Gulmarg Looks Like in July
The landscape is lush. If you are coming from the city, the temperature drop is instant. You will see the slopes of the Apharwat peak finally shedding their heavy winter snow, revealing the rocky, high-altitude terrain beneath.
Walking through the meadows is the main event. In July, the grass is high, and the air is crisp. It is a photographer's dream, but keep in mind that the trails can be muddy if there has been recent rain.

July Weather and Daily Temperatures
You can expect daytime temperatures to hover around 15°C to 20°C. It is comfortable, but the sun at this altitude is deceptive. You will get a sunburn much faster here than you realise, so high-SPF sunscreen is non-negotiable.
Evenings drop significantly, often down to 8°C or 10°C. We tell our guests to pack layers. A good, light fleece is your best friend when the sun disappears behind the peaks.

Top Things to Do
The Gondola remains the number one draw. In July, you are taking the ride for the view of the valley, not for the snow sports. Aim for the first slot at 9:00 AM to beat the mid-morning queues.
Beyond the gondola, horse riding remains a popular way to reach the upper meadows. Just ensure you are comfortable with the pace, as the paths can be steep and narrow.

Walking to Khilanmarg and Alpather
If you have the stamina, the walk to Khilanmarg is essential in July. The wildflowers are in full bloom, and the walk is gentle enough for most. Alpather Lake, however, is a much harder hike.
Only attempt the trek to Alpather Lake if you are fit and prepared for changing conditions. Even in July, you might cross small patches of leftover snow.
