Most people treat Lolab Valley as a drive-through, barely pausing to breathe the air before heading toward the next destination on their list.

That is a mistake. I have spent weeks here, and every time I return, I find a new track that leads deeper into the pine forests or a path that drops down into an untouched apple orchard. You need at least forty-eight hours to even begin to peel back the layers of this landscape.

This 2-day Lolab Valley itinerary is designed for those who want to move past the surface and spend some time walking the dirt paths, visiting the local sites, and eating with the people who call this valley home.

Day 1: Arrival and the Quiet of Sogam

Start your first morning early. Leaving Srinagar at 7:00 AM ensures you reach the valley floor by mid-morning, avoiding the heat of the road. Your first stop should be the administrative heart of the valley, Sogam.

Check into your accommodation, have a quick tea, and set out on foot. The fields surrounding the main village are filled with wildflowers in the summer. Don't worry about having a specific destination for your first walk; the best move is to follow the sound of the stream that bisects the valley floor.

Day 2: Kalaroos Caves and Nature Walks

On your second day, head toward the Kalaroos caves. These are shrouded in local myth and archaeological curiosity. The trek up to the caves is steep in parts, but the view looking back over the valley is unmatched.

Spend the afternoon on the forest trails that climb toward the higher pastures. If you are feeling ambitious, ask a local guide to take you to a spot where the tree line thins out—it is the best place in the entire valley for photography.

Integrating Bangus Valley into Your Trip

If you are feeling the itch to see the fabled meadows of Bangus Valley, keep in mind that it adds a layer of complexity to your logistics. You cannot simply 'swing by' on a whim.

Most travelers use their second day in this itinerary to coordinate with their guide for the onward journey to Bangus. It requires an early start and, depending on the season, a high-clearance vehicle. Let us know if you want to swap the second day of local walks for a drive into the high-altitude meadows.

Essential Logistics for a 48-Hour Stay

Communication is spotty, so download your maps and keep a physical list of your contacts before you depart Srinagar. Carry enough cash for your entire stay, as ATMs in the interior are few and far between.

For a short trip, a small daypack is all you need. Focus on bringing sturdy shoes; you will be walking on uneven ground, often through soft soil or damp forest floors.

Why This Itinerary Works for Offbeat Travelers

This plan forces you to stay stationary. By focusing your time on one area, you reduce the physical toll of constant driving, which is the undoing of many Kashmir trips.

It also allows you to be flexible. If it rains, or if you meet a local family who invites you for tea, you have the breathing room to accept without feeling like you are 'falling behind' on your schedule.

We plan and run trips across Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh every week of the year. Everything here comes from routes we drive, stays we inspect and questions our travellers actually ask.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Can I see both Lolab and Bangus in two days?

You can see parts of both, but you will be spending most of your time in the car. We recommend this itinerary for those who prefer to spend more time walking and exploring slowly.

Are the Kalaroos caves difficult to reach?

The trek to the caves requires moderate fitness. It is a short walk but can be steep and slippery, especially if there has been rain recently.

Do I need a special permit for these areas?

Usually, standard visitor ID is enough, but travel to border-adjacent regions sometimes requires specific documentation. Check with your tour provider before departing.

Is it safe to walk alone in the valley?

The valley is generally peaceful, but we always advise hiring a local guide if you plan to stray far from the main village paths. It supports the local economy and prevents you from getting lost.

What should I pack for a 2-day trip?

Pack layers. Even in the peak of summer, mornings can be chilly. Sturdy walking boots and a good rain jacket are essential for mountain weather.
