Five days in Kashmir is short, which is precisely why you need a plan that cuts out the fluff and gets you straight to the heart of the valleys. Too many travellers try to cram Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam all into a single long weekend, spending half their holiday staring out of a car window in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
By focusing your energy on Srinagar and the Lidder valley, a well-paced kashmir itinerary 5 days gives you genuine room to breathe. You will sip kahwa on a traditional cedar houseboat, walk beneath ancient chinar trees in royal gardens, and still have time to stand in the crisp mountain air where the road ends at Chandanwari.
Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar and Dal Lake Houseboat
Land at Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, where our driver will meet you for the short thirty-minute transfer to the edge of Dal Lake. Step straight off the mainland onto a traditional wooden shikara that glides across the calm water to your heritage houseboat moored near Nigeen or Dal.
Spend your afternoon unhurriedly. Sit on the front veranda watching local vendors paddle past selling fresh lotus stems and saffron, then take an evening shikara ride as the setting sun turns the surrounding Zangli mountain ridges a deep bruised purple.

Day 2: Exploring Srinagar Gardens and Old City
Begin your morning early at Nishat Bagh or Shalimar Bagh before the tour buses arrive. Built by Mughal emperors on terraced hillsides sloping toward the lake, these gardens offer quiet stone pavilions, cascading fountains, and centuries-old shade trees.
In the afternoon, head into Srinagar's historic old town to see the intricate wooden architecture of Khanqah-e-Moula and the bustling spice markets around Zaina Kadal. Stop by a local bakery to sample freshly baked girda bread paired with salt tea.

Day 3: Transfer to Pahalgam via Saffron Fields
Check out after breakfast and hit the national highway heading south toward Pahalgam, roughly a ninety-kilometre drive that takes about two and a half hours. Make a quick stop at the flat saffron-growing plateau of Pampore to pick up genuine Kashmiri zafran directly from local farmers.
As you follow the Lidder river upstream past apple orchards and pine forests, check into your Pahalgam hotel by early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day walking along the rushing river paths or relaxing in the meadows of Baisaran if you have the energy for a short pony ride.

Day 4: Chandanwari, Betaab Valley, and Aru
Dedicate your fourth day entirely to exploring the dramatic tributary valleys branching out from Pahalgam. Hire a local union cab in the morning because outside commercial taxis are not permitted on these specific scenic routes.
Drive first to Betaab Valley, named after the Bollywood film shot amidst its wide meadows and crystal-clear streams. From there, push further up the gorge to Chandanwari, where the road terminates at the base camp for the Amarnath Yatra. On your way back down toward Pahalgam, take the afternoon to visit the lush pastoral village of Aru across the river.

Day 5: Return to Srinagar and Departure
Wake up to the sound of mist rising off the Lidder river before packing your bags for the return journey to Srinagar. The drive back to the airport takes roughly two and a half hours, leaving plenty of buffer time for security checks at the terminal.
If your flight departs late in the evening, use a spare hour in Srinagar to pick up handmade walnut wood carvings or hand-woven Pashmina shawls from government-certified emporiums before heading home.

Before you book
Five days in the valley is just enough time to scratch the surface of what makes this landscape unforgettable. By keeping your travel radius focused and avoiding the temptation to over-schedule every hour, you return home feeling rested rather than exhausted.

Questions we get asked
Is 5 days enough time to visit Gulmarg and Pahalgam?
Trying to include both Gulmarg and Pahalgam in five days leaves you spending most of your holiday inside a car. We recommend choosing just one region to enjoy it properly.
Do I need special permits to visit Chandanwari during this itinerary?
No special permits are required for normal day-trip visitors driving up to Chandanwari outside of the Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage months in July and August.
What is the best way to travel between Srinagar and Pahalgam?
Renting a private cab through a local operator is the most comfortable and reliable way to handle the ninety-kilometre transfer between Srinagar and Pahalgam.
