There is a specific silence that falls over Srinagar when the first heavy snowfall begins; it is as if the entire valley is holding its breath.

If you are chasing the snow, timing is everything. It is not just about showing up in winter; it is about understanding how the season shifts from late autumn to deep freeze.

We see the first dusting as early as November in the higher reaches, but for the true blanket of white, you need to know exactly where and when to look.

The Snowfall Timeline

December marks the beginning of the real cold. The higher altitudes like Gulmarg see their first reliable snow towards the middle of the month.

January and February are the peak months. This is when the valley experiences 'Chillai-Kalan', the 40-day period of harshest winter, where temperatures drop well below freezing.

Early Winter vs. Peak Winter

Early winter (mid-December to early January) is great if you want to avoid the massive crowds. You get a mix of crisp, clear skies and fresh snow.

Peak winter is for those who want a true arctic experience. The snow is deep, the skiing in Gulmarg is at its best, and the trees are heavily laden with frost.

Where to Experience the First Snow

If you arrive early and don't see snow in the city, head higher. Gulmarg is almost always the answer.

Even if Srinagar is just cold and rainy, the gondola ride to the upper reaches of Apharwat will put you right in the middle of a winter wonderland.

Snow Conditions in Srinagar vs. Gulmarg

Srinagar is lower in altitude, so snowfall here is less frequent than in the mountains. When it does snow in the city, it often melts quickly.

Gulmarg, conversely, stays under a thick layer for months. If your goal is snow sports or photography, dedicate more time to the higher elevations.

What to Pack for Winter in Kashmir

Layers are non-negotiable. You need a high-quality thermal base layer, a heavy down jacket, and reliable, waterproof boots.

Do not forget sunglasses. The reflection of the sun off the snow in high altitudes can be intense, even on cloudy days.

Tips for Winter Travel

Expect delays. Snow clearing is a massive operation, and road closures are a part of life. We always advise guests to keep an extra day or two in their itinerary.

Stay flexible with your plans. If a road is blocked, take it as an opportunity to spend more time where you are instead of trying to force a journey.

Before you book

Winter in Kashmir is transformative. The cold isn't just an inconvenience; it is part of the charm that changes the texture of the entire region, from the food we eat to the pace of daily life.

If you are planning your trip and want to ensure you catch the peak of the season, reach out to us. We can help you time your visit and ensure your accommodation is ready for the cold.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

When does snowfall usually start in Kashmir?

Light snowfall begins in the high-altitude regions in late November, but for the entire valley to see significant snow, late December and January are the most reliable months.

Will I see snow in Srinagar in January?

It is possible, but not guaranteed. Srinagar occasionally gets heavy snowfall in January, but it doesn't stay as long as it does in the higher mountains like Gulmarg or Pahalgam.

Is it too cold for children or the elderly?

It is extremely cold. If you are travelling with vulnerable groups, ensure you have quality heating in your accommodation and keep the itinerary limited to avoid excessive time outdoors.

What is the best month for skiing?

January and February are the gold standard for skiing in Gulmarg. The snow base is at its deepest, and the conditions are consistently stable for the slopes.

Are roads always open in winter?

Not always. The highway connecting Jammu to Srinagar can be closed by heavy snow or landslides. We recommend flying into Srinagar to save time and avoid road-related headaches.
