Standing outside the main shrine office at the Bhavan, looking up toward the Bhairavnath Temple perched on the sheer cliff, your legs will tell you they have had enough. The steep vertical climb from the holy cave to Bhairavnath is punishing after a twelve-kilometre trek.

Fortunately, the aerial ropeway bridges this gap in under five minutes. But before you join the queue, understanding the exact price of ropeway in vaishno devi and how the ticketing system works will save you time and confusion.

Operated directly by the Shrine Board, this cable car system is efficient, safe, and heavily regulated. Let us look at what it costs, how to secure your seats, and whether you should skip it or ride it.

Current Ropeway Fare Structure

The pricing for the cable car is kept uniform by the shrine authorities to ensure accessibility for all devotees. As of the current season, a standard two-way or one-way ticket costs roughly one hundred rupees per person, though minor revisions are implemented periodically by the board.

Children above three years require a full ticket, while infants travel without charge. You can purchase tickets using cash or digital UPI at the dedicated counters located right next to the Bhavan queuing area.

Be wary of touts outside the official counter claiming they can get you fast-track ropeway access for a higher fee. The queue moves steadily, and all passengers board strictly on a first-come, first-served sequence based on token numbers.

  • Standard ticket fare is approximately INR 100 per passenger per trip
  • Digital payments and cash accepted at official Shrine Board counters
  • No differential pricing for senior citizens on the ropeway
  • Return tickets available to purchase at the lower station

How to Book Your Ropeway Tickets

Unlike helicopter bookings that require weeks of advance planning online, ropeway tickets are primarily sold on-the-spot at the Bhavan station. You do not need to book these from Katra or Jammu.

During peak festive seasons like Navratri or weekends, the queue for tickets can take anywhere from twenty to forty-five minutes. If your group includes elderly members who cannot stand in long lines, one member should head to the counter while the rest rest near the cloakroom.

Online advance booking through the official Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board website is occasionally rolled out for specific peak slots, but walk-in counters remain the primary method used by most pilgrims.

Operational Hours and Seasonal Availability

The cable car operates daily from early morning until late evening, usually aligning with the temple's daily rituals. However, operations are entirely weather-dependent.

High mountain winds, dense fog, or sudden winter snowstorms in the Trikuta range can prompt temporary suspension of the ropeway for safety reasons. If high winds kick in, the system shuts down instantly until conditions stabilize.

Always check with the shrine announcement system before walking over to the boarding station so you do not wait in line during a weather hold.

What Happens During Weather Closures?

If the ropeway suspends operations due to high winds, your ticket amount is fully refundable at the counter. You will then need to rely on the traditional steep walking path to reach the Bhairavnath Temple if you choose to complete that final leg of the pilgrimage.

Who Should Consider the Ropeway

The climb from the Bhavan to Bhairavnath Temple is short—only about 1.5 kilometres—but it climbs steeply via stone steps with a gradient that tests sore calves and breathing capacity.

Elderly pilgrims, individuals with mild respiratory issues, or anyone experiencing severe knee fatigue after the main trek should definitely take the ropeway. Completing the yatra without visiting Bhairavnath Temple is traditionally considered incomplete, and the cable car makes this final darshan possible for those who cannot manage the vertical stairs.

On the other hand, if you are fit, hiking up the old stone path offers a quiet, reflective experience that cable car riders miss entirely.

Alternative Transport Options at the Shrine

If the ropeway queue is exceptionally long or weather closures shut down the system, you still have traditional choices for moving around the upper sanctum areas.

Ponies and porters operate on the path to Bhairavnath, though navigating the steep steps on a horse requires a steady nerve. Palkis are also available for hire from the Bhavan courtyard.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Can I book the Vaishno Devi ropeway ticket online from home?

Online booking is occasionally available on the official Shrine Board portal, but on-the-spot ticket counters at the Bhavan station remain the primary and most reliable method for obtaining passes.

How long is the ropeway ride from Bhavan to Bhairavnath?

The cable car ride takes roughly three to five minutes each way, covering a steep aerial distance that would otherwise take forty-five minutes of strenuous stair climbing.

Is luggage allowed inside the ropeway cabins?

Large suitcases and heavy backpacks are not permitted inside the passenger cabins. Pilgrims must deposit large bags at the official cloakrooms near the Bhavan before boarding.

Are children charged full fare on the cable car?

Children above the age of three require a standard ticket, while toddlers below three years can travel on their parents' lap without a separate ticket.

What happens if I miss my return cable car trip?

Ropeway tickets are generally valid for the day of purchase. If you miss your scheduled slot, station attendants usually accommodate you on the next available cabin depending on crowd volume.
