I find that most people only start researching the distance from Srinagar to Daksum once they are already feeling overwhelmed by the crowds in the city centre.
The drive is manageable, but it requires a bit of foresight. You are looking at a journey of approximately 100 to 110 kilometres. On a perfect day with no traffic, you might shave the time down, but in Kashmir, we rarely bank on 'perfect days' regarding road travel.
Getting to Daksum is not just about the distance; it is about the changing topography. You will start in the valley floor and gradually climb towards the rugged, timber-dense slopes where the air gets noticeably thinner and colder.
Distance and Travel Time Breakdown
The distance from Srinagar to Daksum typically takes between four and five hours of driving time. You are heading south through the Anantnag district, which is well-connected to the capital. However, the last 30 kilometres are where the road slows down significantly.
Do not be surprised if your driver takes a circuitous route to avoid town traffic or road maintenance. It is standard practice to check the live status of the road near Achabal before you depart from your hotel in Srinagar.
- Total distance: ~105 km.
- Average duration: 4.5 hours.
- Optimal departure: 8:00 AM.

Choosing Between Private Cabs and Buses
If you search for public transport, you might find some bus routes that reach the major towns nearby, but there is no reliable public bus that drops you at the door of a Daksum lodge. You would end up hiring a local taxi anyway.
I always recommend booking a private cab for the duration of the trip. It gives you the flexibility to stop at Achabal or Kokernag for as long as you like. Trying to coordinate local transit between these points is a headache you do not want on a holiday.

Road Conditions to Expect
The main arterial roads are paved and in good condition. Once you turn off for the final stretch into the Daksum valley, the road narrows. You will encounter steep gradients and sharp turns that require a driver who knows the area well.
If you are travelling in late autumn or early spring, be aware that the higher passes near the valley can see light snowfall even when it is sunny in Srinagar. We monitor the road clearance reports daily during these shoulder seasons.

Tips for a Comfortable Road Transfer
Stock up on water and snacks in Srinagar before you head out. The shops become smaller and less frequent the further you go. Carry a small bag for the car, keeping your main luggage in the boot.
Motion sickness can be an issue for some on the winding roads, so sit in the front if you are prone to it. Also, coordinate with your driver to take the scenic route through the villages rather than just sticking to the main highway the entire time.
