Things to Do in Daksum: Finding Silence in the Forest
Discover the hidden valley of Daksum and why you should visit this pristine corner of Kashmir.
Daksum is a place for those who prefer the sound of a river over the hum of city traffic, offering lush forests and cool mountain air.

The road to Daksum ends, and that is exactly why you come here.
When you drive past Achabal and Kokernag, the valley begins to narrow. The air turns cold and sharp with the scent of pine and cedar. I remember my first trip to Daksum clearly; it wasn't the destination itself that caught me, but the sheer lack of anything else. No sprawling bazaars, no crowds, just the Bringhi River carving its way through the valley floor.
This is a place for people who are tired of the standard tourist circuit. If you are looking for activities, you won't find bungee jumping or theme parks. You will find walking trails, riverbanks, and enough forest canopy to make you forget the outside world entirely.
Trout Fishing in the Bringhi River
The Bringhi river is the lifeblood of this valley, and for anglers, it is the primary attraction. The water is fast, cold, and clear. If you have the right permits and gear, you can spend the entire day working the river. It is a meditative process, watching the water and waiting for that distinct tug on the line.
Even if you don't fish, sitting by the river is a fundamental part of the experience. The banks are covered in grass and flat stones that make perfect chairs. Just be sure to bring a jacket; even in the middle of summer, the breeze coming off the river keeps the air surprisingly cool.

Exploring the Pine and Deodar Forests
You are surrounded by dense forests here. The main activity in Daksum is simply walking. There are informal trails that lead up into the hills, winding through stands of tall pine and deodar trees. These aren't marked trails with signposts; they are old shepherd paths.
We usually recommend starting early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, when the light is filtering through the trees. You don't need a guide for the immediate vicinity, but if you want to push deeper into the forest toward Sinthan Top, having a local guide is wise to ensure you don't lose the track.

Photography in the Daksum Valley
If you are a landscape photographer, Daksum is a playground. The contrast between the dark green of the forest and the bright, foaming white of the river is a classic composition. Because the valley is deep, you get long, dramatic shadows that make for some excellent high-contrast photography.
The best time for photos is early afternoon when the sun is high enough to reach the bottom of the valley, illuminating the riverbanks. Carry a tripod if you want to capture the motion of the river without blurring the surrounding trees.

Picnicking by the Riverbanks
There is no finer lunch in Kashmir than one eaten on a wool blanket beside the Bringhi. Because Daksum is isolated, you need to bring your food supplies from Anantnag or Kokernag before you head up. There are very few shops once you reach the village.
Pack simple, hearty food. Fruits, nuts, and a thermos of tea are perfect. Spend a few hours here—the point is to do absolutely nothing other than watch the water pass by.

Wildlife Spotting in the Region
You won't necessarily see large mammals, but the birdlife is exceptional. If you keep your eyes peeled in the lower branches of the pine trees, you will see a variety of Himalayan birds. It is quiet enough that if you sit still for twenty minutes, you might see deer coming down to the river to drink.
Always remember to keep your distance. This is their habitat, and the lack of human pressure is what makes it so special.

Before you book
Daksum is one of the few places left where you can truly disconnect. It offers a rare silence that is becoming harder to find in the larger tourist hubs of Kashmir.
