The winding road from Kud starts to straighten out, and suddenly the dense pine cover gives way to the open, rolling green of Sanasar. It is a quiet transition, one that makes the altitude shift from the lower Jammu plains feel immediate.
Whether you are finishing a pilgrimage in Katra or heading north from Jammu city, understanding how to reach Sanasar is the first step in ensuring your visit remains calm. The journey isn't just about the destination; it is about managing the sharp turns and the logistics of the climb.
The Route: Jammu to Sanasar
Most visitors start their journey in Jammu. From the airport or railway station, you head north toward Udhampur. The road is a major artery, usually busy with trucks and tourist buses, so keep your patience ready.
Once you pass Udhampur, the scenery changes. You will climb toward Patnitop. From there, it is about 19 kilometres to reach Sanasar. It is a steep, winding ascent, but it is paved and generally reliable throughout the year.

Katra to Sanasar Transport Options
If you are coming directly from Katra after visiting Vaishno Devi, you save a bit of time by not going back to Jammu. You will head toward Reasi and then up through the interior roads connecting to the highway.
Private taxis are the standard recommendation here. Because public buses do not run direct, frequent routes to the meadow, you are essentially chartering a ride for the day.
- Private Taxi: The most flexible option, allowing for stops at Natha Top.
- Shared Cabs: Harder to find direct; you might need to change vehicles at Udhampur.
- Pre-booked Transfers: Best for groups who want a guaranteed vehicle waiting at their hotel.

Travel Time Expectations
From Jammu, expect a drive of four to five hours. If you start early, say around 7:00 AM, you miss the worst of the city traffic and reach the meadows by lunch.
From Katra, the drive is shorter, often closer to three or three-and-a-half hours. The road quality varies near Reasi, so don't expect a high-speed motorway experience.

Road Conditions and Safety
In winter, the stretch near Natha Top can see snow. We advise checking the status of the road if you are travelling in January or February. Sometimes, snow chains are required for the final climb.
During the monsoon, expect some debris on the road between Kud and Patnitop. It is rarely a total closure, but it will slow down your transit significantly.

Booking Tips for Transfers
If you want to avoid haggling at the taxi stand, book your transport in advance. We see too many travellers get frustrated over pricing at the last minute.
Always ask your driver if they have experience with the mountain roads. It sounds basic, but you want someone who knows how to navigate the blind corners near the top.

Before you book
Getting to Sanasar is part of the experience. The rise in elevation from the hot plains to the cool, pine-scented air feels like a real escape, and the journey itself acts as a buffer between city life and the quiet of the meadow.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
Is public transport available to Sanasar?
Public buses run as far as Patnitop or Kud. For the final stretch to Sanasar, you will usually need to hire a local taxi, as there is no reliable, scheduled bus service into the bowl of the meadow.
Can I reach Sanasar by train?
No. The nearest rail head is Udhampur or Jammu Tawi. From there, you must take a car or taxi to complete the remaining distance into the hills.
How long does it take to drive from Jammu?
You should budget about four to five hours. Traffic around Udhampur and the mountain roads can fluctuate, so giving yourself extra time ensures you don't arrive in the dark.
Is the road to Sanasar safe?
It is a standard mountain road. It is narrow in places and quite steep. As long as you have a professional driver and avoid travel during heavy snowstorms or severe landslides, it is considered safe for tourism.
Should I visit Patnitop on the way?
Yes, many travellers choose to stop in Patnitop for tea or a walk before continuing to Sanasar. It breaks up the journey nicely and offers a different perspective on the ridge line.
