I first stepped into the meadow at Sanasar in mid-July, and the first thing that struck me was the silence. Unlike the bustling hill stations further north, Sanasar feels like a secret kept by the mountains. It is a deep, green cup of land surrounded by cedar trees, high enough to keep the summer heat at bay.
If you are looking for things to do in Sanasar, you are likely looking for space—space to breathe, to walk, and to get away from the screens. This guide helps you navigate the gentle pace of the valley, from the adrenaline of a launch-off to the quiet of a temple trail.
Tandem Paragliding in Sanasar
This is one of the premier spots for paragliding in Jammu. When the summer winds pick up, you will see bright canopies dotting the sky. The launch point is a short drive from the main meadow, and the landing happens right in the bowl of the valley.
It isn't just about the thrill of the air. From up there, you get a full view of the surrounding mountain ranges and the tiny, doll-like structures of the tourist camp down below. If you have never done it before, the instructors here are professional and well-equipped.

Trekking to Shank Pal Temple
For those who prefer their feet on the ground, the walk to Shank Pal Temple is a non-negotiable part of your trip. The trek is roughly 5 kilometres from the main meadow and takes you through pastures where you might spot local shepherds grazing their herds.
The temple itself is old and humble, built entirely of wood without the use of nails. Standing at that ridge, with the wind moving through the grass, you feel miles away from the noise of the city. It is a steady climb, but it is manageable for most people with average fitness.

Golfing at High Altitude
There is a small, nine-hole golf course located right in the meadow. It is not an international championship course, but that is exactly why it is charming. The grass is natural, the bunkers are earth-pushed, and the backdrop is pure Himalayan forest.
Even if you are not a golfer, the walk around the perimeter of the course is lovely in the late afternoon. You will see families taking walks and kids running in the open space. It is a rare spot where sport and leisure blend perfectly.

Lakeside Relaxation
Sanasar is named after two small lakes—Sana and Sar. While they have shrunk over the years, the area remains a peaceful spot to sit for an hour. It is not the kind of place where you take a boat out; it is the kind of place where you bring a book or a thermos of tea.
I recommend visiting in the late morning before the day-trippers arrive. The water reflects the clouds and the trees, creating a quiet, mirrored effect that is incredibly grounding.

Camping Under the Stars
Because the light pollution is minimal here, the night sky is as much an attraction as the meadow itself. You can find several designated camping sites that offer basic, clean tents. There is nothing quite like waking up to the smell of damp pine needles and fresh mountain air.
We always advise our guests to bring an extra layer, even in the middle of summer. The temperature drops significantly as soon as the sun dips behind the ridge, making a campfire essential.

Before you book
Sanasar does not have a long list of tourist attractions, and that is its biggest strength. It is a place for slow movement, clear air, and long afternoons. Whether you are flying off a ridge or walking to an old wooden temple, the valley forces you to take your time.

Questions we get asked
How long should I spend in Sanasar?
Two full days are perfect. It gives you enough time to trek, try paragliding, and enjoy a slow evening by the meadow without feeling rushed.
Is it better to stay in Sanasar or Patnitop?
Patnitop has more hotel variety, but if you want silence and proximity to nature, stay in Sanasar. It is a much more intimate experience.
