I remember waking up in a wooden lodge in Gulmarg in mid-January to the sound of absolute silence, followed by the soft 'thud' of fresh snow sliding off the tin roof.

There is no experience quite like being in the valley when the world turns monochrome. If you are coming specifically to see snow, you need to time your visit with precision. While the valley gets cold early in the season, the heavy, blanket-like snow that visitors dream of typically arrives in the deeper part of winter.

As a local travel operator, we spend our winters arranging trips for skiers, families, and photographers who want to experience the white landscape. Predicting the weather is never an exact science, but based on years of observing the snowfall patterns in Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Srinagar, I can guide you toward the best month for snow in Kashmir.

December to February: The Peak Season

December marks the beginning of the winter charm. While early December can sometimes be dry, by the third week, the upper reaches usually start receiving significant snowfall. It is a fantastic time if you want to avoid the massive crowds that arrive in January.

January is the heart of winter, locally known as Chilla-i-Kalan. This is the 40-day period of extreme cold. If you want guaranteed, deep snow, this is your best bet. February starts to see a bit of a shift; the snow becomes softer, and the days grow slightly longer, making it popular for families who want to play in the snow without the biting sub-zero temperatures of mid-January.

What to Expect in Each Winter Month

December is often about the 'first fall'. It feels festive, and the atmosphere in Srinagar is lively. January is deep, serious winter. Everything is frozen, and you will need serious thermal gear. February is perhaps the best balanced month—you still have plenty of snow, but the extreme risk of road closures is slightly lower than in mid-winter.

In March, the snow begins to melt at lower altitudes, leaving behind a slushy, muddy landscape in the city, though the mountains remain white. I usually suggest clients skip March if their primary goal is pristine snow photography.

Snow Conditions in Gulmarg vs. Sonamarg

Gulmarg is the crown jewel for snow. Because of its elevation, it consistently receives the heaviest snowfall in the region. Even in a 'dry' year, the slopes of Apharwat are likely to be covered. We send our skiing clients here from late December through to early March.

Sonamarg is different. The road to Sonamarg often closes by December due to the threat of avalanches. While the area is stunning, do not count on reaching it mid-winter unless you have a very specific, cleared-access itinerary. Stick to Gulmarg if you want reliable snow access during the peak winter months.

Winter Activities to Book

The Gondola ride in Gulmarg is the obvious must-do. You must book your tickets online weeks in advance; we see people queuing for hours only to find the slots sold out. Aside from that, snowshoeing in the forest trails of Tangmarg is a quieter way to experience the winter silence.

If you are in Srinagar, take a shikara ride on Dal Lake while it is shrouded in morning mist. It is cold, yes, but having a kangri—a traditional clay pot filled with embers—tucked under your pheran makes it bearable. We always make sure our clients have one provided during these outings.

Packing Essentials for Extreme Cold

Do not pack like you are going on a standard holiday. You need high-quality thermal base layers, a windproof outer jacket, and waterproof boots. I have seen too many travellers arrive in sneakers, only to be forced to rent heavy rubber boots the moment they step onto the snow.

Bring lip balm, heavy moisturiser, and sunglasses. The glare from the snow is intense and can cause eye strain within an hour. A good pair of gloves that allow for camera operation is also worth the investment; you will want to take photos, but you won't want to expose your hands to the air for long.

Booking Your Winter Package Early

Winter is our busiest season. The best hotels in Gulmarg often fill up by October for the December and January period. If you wait until a month before to book, you will find yourself in hotels far from the main lifts, which turns a simple morning commute into a logistics nightmare.

We suggest booking at least three months in advance. This gives you the best choice of rooms and allows us to secure necessary permits and transport that might be constrained by snow clearance schedules. Contact us via our [Experiences](/experiences) page if you want to look at our curated winter itineraries.

Before you book

Planning for a winter trip requires more care than a summer escape, but the payoff of waking up in a snow-covered mountain village is incomparable. Whether you are looking to ski or just sit by a bukhari with a cup of noon chai, winter has a rhythm that settles deep into your bones.

If you would like us to handle the coordination of your winter trip, from the heated rooms to the necessary transport through the snow, please reach out. You can find our current winter packages at the [Destinations](/destinations) section of our site.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Which month is best for heavy snowfall in Kashmir?

January is consistently the best month for heavy, reliable snowfall. It is the heart of winter and offers the most authentic snowy experience in the valley.

Is it safe to visit Kashmir in January?

Yes, provided you are prepared for extreme cold. Always stick to established tourist routes, hire local guides for mountain treks, and keep a flexible schedule in case of heavy snow disrupting travel.

Can I see snow in March?

You will find snow on the high peaks and in Gulmarg, but the lower valley and cities will be melting and potentially slushy. It is less ideal for a 'winter wonderland' experience.

Do I need special permits for winter travel?

Most areas are open, but specific high-altitude treks or remote zones may require permits. Your tour operator should handle these as part of your package.

How cold does it actually get?

Expect temperatures to drop well below zero at night, often between -5°C to -10°C in Gulmarg. Srinagar is usually a few degrees warmer but still freezing.
