Does Zanskar Valley have network?
Navigating communication in the high Himalayas
A practical guide to mobile connectivity and communication challenges in the remote Zanskar Valley.

The vast, isolated stretches between villages are where your signal will disappear.Photo: This Photo was taken by Timothy A. Gonsalves . The moment your phone loses signal between Kargil and Padum, you have two choices: panic or breathe. Most of our guests find that the initial anxiety of being 'offline' fades by the second day, replaced by the realization that the world keeps turning even when you cannot post your view to social media.
To answer your main question: does Zanskar valley have network? Yes, but it is patchy, temperamental, and entirely absent for long stretches of the road.
Current Network Status in Zanskar
Mobile coverage is concentrated primarily in Padum, the district headquarters. Even there, the network can drop out for hours due to power fluctuations or weather interference. Once you leave the town limits to head toward remote villages or trekking trails, consider yourself off-grid.
Do not expect 4G or even stable 3G. While some areas have improved recently, data speeds are often so slow that even sending a simple text message can be a game of patience.

Which Mobile Providers Work Best
Postpaid SIM cards are the only ones that work in Jammu and Kashmir. If you are using a prepaid SIM from another state, it will likely be useless the moment you cross into the region.
BSNL and Jio generally offer the most reliable coverage in Zanskar, but 'reliable' is relative here. We advise our clients to carry two different providers if staying connected for emergency reasons is critical. Relying on a single provider is a gamble you don't want to take in such a remote area.

The Importance of Offline Planning
Assume that you will have no internet. Download your maps, travel documents, and music playlists before you leave Leh or Kargil. There is no 'getting it later'.
If you are driving yourself, carry physical maps. It sounds old-fashioned, but I have seen too many travelers get stuck because their Google Maps cache didn't load the terrain, leaving them without navigation in a valley where all the roads look identical.

Safety and Emergency Communication
If you are embarking on a long trek, do not rely on your mobile phone for safety. We always recommend that groups carry a satellite device or, at the very least, leave a detailed itinerary with their hotel staff in Padum or [Leh](/destinations/ladakh/leh).
Local police and administration have wireless radio systems. In the event of a genuine emergency, these are the channels that actually function. Know where the nearest village administration office is located.

Setting Expectations for Digital Detox
The best advice I can give is to stop fighting the lack of signal. The Zanskar valley is one of the few places left where you can be entirely present. When you are sitting by the river in the evening, the urge to check your emails will eventually be replaced by the habit of watching the light change on the mountains.
Use the downtime to write in a journal or actually talk to your travel companions. You will find that your trip becomes much richer when your attention is focused on the landscape rather than your screen.

Before you book
Staying connected in Zanskar is an exercise in letting go. While it might feel daunting initially, the inability to scroll is a gift that allows you to engage with the stunning reality of the high Himalayas.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
Can I use my prepaid SIM card in Zanskar?
No. Prepaid SIMs from other states in India do not function in the Jammu and Kashmir region. You must have a postpaid connection.
Is there Wi-Fi in hotels in Padum?
Some hotels claim to have Wi-Fi, but it is often unreliable or just a shared local connection that fails during power outages. Do not depend on it for work.
