Most people stay within the tourist loop of Srinagar, but the road that climbs towards Sinthan Top offers a look at a completely different side of the valley. It is a route of shifting textures—from the flat, willow-lined roads near the city to the sharp, slate-grey cliffs of the high mountains.

The first time I drove this route, I didn't appreciate the need for a slow pace. You want to rush to the top, but the real story is in the valleys you pass through. Here is the itinerary we build for our clients who want to experience the mountains properly.

Itinerary Highlights for Sinthan Top

This plan covers the transition from urban Srinagar into the high alpine zones. You will hit the historical springs of the south, the deep forests of Daksum, and the summit of the pass itself.

The highlight is the dramatic change in topography. You see how the geography of the Himalayas dictates the lifestyle of the people living here.

Day 1: Srinagar to Anantnag

Depart Srinagar early, ideally by 8:00 AM. This gives you time to stop at the saffron fields of Pampore if it's the right season. The drive south is straightforward, but the traffic near Anantnag can be dense.

Spend your afternoon visiting the ruins of Martand Sun Temple. The scale of the stones against the backdrop of the mountains is immense. Spend the night in a hotel in Anantnag to rest for the climb ahead.

Day 2: Exploring Daksum and the Mountain Pass

This is your primary day. Drive from Anantnag to Daksum, passing through the trout-filled rivers of the region. Once in Daksum, the world becomes quiet, hushed by the thick pine forests.

From here, you begin the ascent. The road is steep. As you climb higher, the trees disappear, replaced by meadows and eventually the bare rock of the high pass. Spend time at the top, take your photos, and return to the solitude of a Daksum guesthouse for the night.

Day 3: Returning via Verinag

On your way back, stop at Verinag, the source of the Jhelum River. The Mughal-era garden here is perfectly symmetrical, a complete contrast to the chaotic, untamed nature of the pass you just visited.

Return to Srinagar by the late afternoon, taking the route through the plains to see the changing landscape one last time. It is a long day, but the drive is manageable if you leave by midday.

Customising Your Experience

This itinerary is a template. If you love trekking, we can add a full day in the forests near Daksum. If you prefer history, we can extend the time spent in Achabal or Kokernag.

It is all about how much time you want to spend on the road versus in the field. Our guide page has more details on specific stops if you are building your own path.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Is 3 days enough for a Srinagar to Sinthan Top trip?

Yes, 3 days is the perfect duration. It allows for a relaxed pace, stops at historical sites like Verinag, and enough time to enjoy the mountain environment without being constantly behind the wheel.

What is the best vehicle for this itinerary?

A robust 4x4 or a high-ground-clearance SUV is necessary. The road to the pass features steep gradients and can be rough, making standard sedans unsuitable for comfortable travel.

Can I add more stops to this itinerary?

Absolutely. You can include more time in Kokernag or Achabal, or add a detour to the Gurez valley if you have extra time and a permit. We customize itineraries to match your interests.

Are there restaurants on the route?

While there are small tea stalls and local shops, formal restaurants are limited once you pass Anantnag. We recommend carrying snacks and water for the mountain leg of the journey.

How do I book this itinerary with your agency?

Contact us with your travel dates. We will provide a quote that includes a dedicated driver, vehicle, and pre-booked accommodation in the most scenic locations on the route.
