The road south from Srinagar changes as you leave the city limits, moving past the fruit orchards of Pulwama and into the greener, quieter terrain of Anantnag. Most travellers stick to the main highways, but once you turn off toward the springs, you enter a different rhythm.
This srinagar to kokernag itinerary is designed to give you a full day of discovery without the feeling of being rushed. You are heading to the 'seven springs' of Kokernag, but the journey is just as vital as the destination itself.
Morning Departure from Srinagar
Start your day early. I cannot stress this enough. If you leave Srinagar by 8:00 AM, you bypass the worst of the traffic in Anantnag town. This gives you a clean run down the highway, arriving at your first major stop by mid-morning.
Pack some light snacks and water. While there are shops along the route, you don't want to spend your morning hunting for basic supplies when you could be watching the landscape transition from urban to rural. Having your transport pre-booked is key here, as relying on shared transport can cut significantly into your sightseeing time.

Scenic Stops Along the Way
You should make at least two stops on the way to Kokernag. The first is Achabal. The Mughal garden here is smaller than the ones in Srinagar, but it is often much quieter. Spend an hour here; the water flow is spectacular and the layout is intimate.
The second stop should be Verinag. It is slightly further south, but it is the source of the Jhelum river. The octagonal pond is a marvel of ancient engineering. The water is a deep, impossible blue. It is a perfect place to stretch your legs before the final leg into Kokernag.

Time Spent at the Seven Springs
Arriving at Kokernag by midday is perfect. The gardens are expansive, and the springs—the 'seven' distinct outlets of water—are why you came. Spend your time walking the perimeter. The higher you go in the garden, the better the view of the entire valley.
Avoid trying to cram too much in after you arrive. Just walking the paths and sitting near the water channels is the real experience. If you find a quiet bench under a Chinar tree, stay there for twenty minutes. It is the best way to soak in the atmosphere of the site.

Dining on Local Trout
You cannot visit this area without trying the trout. The region is famous for its trout farms, and most local restaurants will serve it fresh. It is usually pan-fried with simple spices that don't overpower the flavour of the fish.
It is a heavy lunch, so do not plan on doing any strenuous hiking immediately afterward. Most visitors find that a long, slow lunch at one of the roadside cafes near the garden entrance is the highlight of the day.

Returning to Srinagar
The drive back usually takes about two to two and a half hours, depending on the traffic in Anantnag. Try to time your departure so that you are heading back as the sun begins to lower. The light on the mountains on the return journey is stunning.
Check with your driver about road conditions before you leave, especially if you are travelling in the shoulder seasons. Sometimes, road work can add an hour to the trip. Knowing this beforehand keeps the return leg stress-free.

Before you book
A day trip to Kokernag is a chance to see a part of Kashmir that feels distinct from the bustling hubs of Srinagar or Gulmarg. The combination of water, history, and local food makes it a classic experience.
