The light changes the moment you pass beyond the urban sprawl of Anantnag. The frantic rhythm of the city fades, replaced by the persistent, cooling rush of the Bringhi River.

I remember the first time I took this road; the sudden silence of the forest at Daksum felt like someone had turned the volume down on the world. This is not a place of grand monuments or crowded viewpoints. It is a place of deep, pine-scented air and the constant sound of water.

If you are looking for a break from the standard circuits, our Srinagar to Daksum itinerary offers a genuine slice of quiet. It is a long day, involving about four hours of driving each way, but the reward is a landscape that feels largely untouched.

Early Departure from Srinagar

To make the most of this trip, you must leave Srinagar by 7:00 AM at the latest. The NH44 highway can be unpredictable, and the traffic near Anantnag starts to thicken by mid-morning. We always advise our clients to take this early slot to clear the initial congestion.

Pack a thermos of tea and some light breakfast before you go. You will pass through Pampore and Avantipur early on, where the morning light hits the saffron fields and ancient ruins beautifully. Keep your camera accessible, but don't stop for long; save your time for the higher elevations near Daksum.

Stops Along the Anantnag Route

The road south holds several points of interest worth a brief pause. Achabal is the most logical first stop. The Mughal Garden there is far less crowded than the ones in Srinagar, and the spring water is remarkably clear.

Kokernag is another necessary stop. It sits slightly off the main road and provides a perfect opportunity to stretch your legs. The botanical garden is expansive, and walking the paths alongside the spring source helps break up the two-hour drive from Srinagar. If you need fuel or basic supplies, Anantnag is the last major town with full services before you head into the more remote forested areas.

Mid-Day Arrival in the Daksum Valley

You will know you have reached Daksum when the road narrows and the deciduous trees give way to dense pine and fir forests. The air temperature drops noticeably. By noon, the sun is high enough to illuminate the valley floor, creating high-contrast patches of light and shadow.

Most visitors aim to arrive by 12:30 PM. This gives you time to find a spot along the Bringhi River for a picnic. The water is freezing, even in the height of summer, fed directly by glacial runoff. I recommend bringing a packed lunch, as dining options in the immediate vicinity are limited to the forest department guest house cafeteria, which requires advance notice.

Afternoon Forest Walks and Exploration

The afternoon is for walking. There is a well-trodden path that follows the river upstream. It is not an intense hike, but the terrain is uneven with exposed roots and loose stones, so wear proper footwear.

As you move further into the woods, the sound of the road disappears completely. You might see locals herding sheep or, if you are quiet, birds of prey circling high above the canopy. This is the time to sit by the bank and just observe. Daksum is not about checking off a list of sights; it is about the pace of the forest.

Return Journey Tips

You need to start your drive back by 4:00 PM. Mountain roads in Kashmir are poorly lit, and the fog often rolls in quickly after sunset. If you have any interest in photography, the late afternoon light on the road toward Sinthan Top is spectacular, but keep a strict eye on the time.

If you feel adventurous, you can drive a short way up the winding road toward Sinthan Pass before turning back. The elevation gain provides a dramatic view of the valley below, which is quite different from the perspective you get from the riverbank.

Before you book

A day trip to Daksum is a reminder of what Kashmir feels like without the buzz of tourist hubs. It is quiet, green, and demanding in its own subtle way, asking only for your patience and your time.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Is the road to Daksum suitable for all vehicles?

The road is generally in good condition and paved, suitable for standard hatchbacks and sedans. However, if there has been recent heavy rainfall, minor washouts can occur. Always check current conditions with your driver or operator before leaving.

Can I combine Daksum with a trip to Sinthan Top?

It is possible, but it makes for an extremely long day. If you choose to go as far as Sinthan Top, start your day even earlier, around 6:00 AM, and be prepared for significant elevation changes and potential altitude sickness.
