The silence at 12,000 feet is absolute, broken only by the wind cutting across the jagged divide between Kashmir and Chenab Valley. If you are asking if the pass is open, you are likely looking for that specific kind of isolation.

Sinthan Top is not your typical tourist stop. It is a high-altitude mountain pass that demands respect from the weather. We see many travellers turn back at Daksum because they didn't check the road status, so here is the reality of planning your visit.

General Opening Times for the Pass

The pass generally opens to civilian traffic in late April or early May, depending entirely on the previous winter’s snowfall. If we have had a heavy winter, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) might push opening into June to clear the deep drifts.

Once open, the road remains accessible through the summer and early autumn. The weather is stable until late October, when the first heavy snows usually arrive. We advise clients not to bank on late-season visits after the middle of November, as the risk of being snowed in increases exponentially.

Seasonal Closures and Travel Alerts

Winter closure is total. From December through April, the road is buried under metres of snow. It is a dangerous route during this time, and local authorities strictly prohibit travel past the checkposts near Daksum.

Spring thaw brings the risk of landslides. Even if the road is technically 'open', you might find yourself waiting for hours while crews clear rockfall. We always check with the local district administration in Anantnag on the morning of any planned crossing.

Verifying Access for Your Planned Dates

Do not rely solely on online maps or general travel forums. These are rarely updated in real-time. If you are booking a package, we handle the verification daily.

If you are travelling independently, the best way to check is to call the local tourist office in Kokernag or ask the police station at the Daksum checkpoint. They see the weather unfolding in real-time.

How to Include Sinthan Top in Your Package

Including this route requires a flexible itinerary. We often pair it with nights in Daksum or near the springs at Kokernag to ensure you are close to the base before attempting the climb.

We arrange 4x4 vehicles specifically for this route. Standard cars often struggle with the steep gradient and rough patches if recent weather has damaged the tarmac. Visit our Sinthan Top guide to see the ideal approach.

Booking with Reliable Local Operators

We have run these routes since the road was improved for tourists. Our drivers know exactly when a shift in the sky means it is time to turn around. We don't just book a car; we manage your safety through the pass.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Is Sinthan Top open to tourists right now?

Road status changes daily based on weather and snow. We recommend checking with local authorities in Anantnag or contacting us directly before your departure, as updates can shift within hours.

What is the best month to visit Sinthan Top?

June through September offer the most reliable weather and clear roads. You get vibrant green meadows on the descent into the Chenab Valley, which are stunning during these months.

Can a standard sedan drive to Sinthan Top?

While some sedans make it during perfect weather, we strongly advise a high-ground-clearance SUV. The road surface can be uneven, and sudden weather changes require reliable vehicle performance.

Are there any permits needed for the pass?

Currently, Indian tourists do not need special permits, but you must carry valid government-issued photo identification to show at security checkpoints along the route.

How long does the drive from Srinagar take?

Expect 5 to 7 hours of travel time depending on stops. The route takes you through Anantnag and Daksum, so we recommend breaking the journey to manage fatigue.
