The rumble of the tracks as you cross the plains into Jammu has always been the prelude to a Kashmir holiday, but the introduction of the Vande Bharat service has turned that long, often tedious journey into something much smoother.
I've made the journey from Delhi to Jammu dozens of times, and the difference in comfort with these modern rakes is noticeable. If you are planning your next trip and wondering how to reach Kashmir by Vande Bharat, here is exactly how to manage the transit.
Overview of the Vande Bharat Service to Jammu
The Vande Bharat service is primarily a high-speed link to Jammu Tawi station. It is a massive improvement over older sleeper trains, offering better seating, cleaner interiors, and faster transit times. The goal is to get you to the doorstep of the mountains with as little fatigue as possible.
It is important to manage expectations: the train does not currently pull into Srinagar. Your journey by rail ends at Jammu Tawi. From there, the terrain requires a road transfer to cross the mountains into the Kashmir valley.

Booking Your Tickets
Tickets for these trains sell out fast. You should aim to book as soon as the window opens, usually 120 days in advance on the official Indian Railways portal. If you wait until the last minute, you will likely find yourself looking at long waitlists.
I suggest opting for the Executive Class if you can. The extra space and improved meal service make a significant difference, especially when you consider that you will still have a long drive ahead of you once you reach Jammu.

Connectivity from Jammu to Srinagar
Once you step off the train at Jammu Tawi, your road journey begins. You have a few options: private cabs, shared taxis, or state-run buses. The drive usually takes between 7 and 10 hours depending on traffic at the Z-Morh tunnel area and general road conditions.
We usually arrange a private SUV for our clients to meet them at the station. This allows for a flexible departure time, which is crucial if your train arrives with a delay, and gives you the ability to stop for food or photos whenever you like.

Why Train Travel is a Popular Choice
Many of our guests prefer the train over flying because it avoids the volatility of flight prices and the stress of airport security. It is also significantly more comfortable than a long-distance bus. You arrive in Jammu relatively refreshed.
There is a specific joy in the changing scenery as you head north. The flat plains slowly give way to the foothills, and you start to get glimpses of the scale of the mountains before you even begin the final climb into the valley.

Tips for a Comfortable Railway Journey
Pack a small overnight bag. Even though the train is fast, the transition to the car is smoother if you aren't dragging a massive suitcase through the station platforms. Keep your documents and warm layers easily accessible.
Always factor in a buffer at Jammu. Do not schedule your taxi connection to leave the moment your train is slated to arrive. Give yourself at least an hour to navigate the station and meet your driver. Explore our experiences page to see how we coordinate these transfers.

Before you book
Reaching the valley by train is a rewarding way to start your journey. It allows you to transition into the pace of mountain life more effectively than a flight.
