How Many Days Are Required for a Kashmir Trip?

Deciding on the ideal duration for your Kashmir trip requires balancing sight-seeing with the reality of mountain travel. Find out how long you should stay.

I remember my first trip to Srinagar; I thought three days would be plenty, but by the second evening on the Dal Lake, I was already calling my office to ask for two more days of leave. There is a specific rhythm to the valley that does not lend itself to rushed itineraries.

When clients ask about the ideal duration for a Kashmir trip, I always caution them against over-packing their schedule. This isn't a city break where you can tick off museums by the hour. The mountains, the winding roads, and the weather demand a slower pace if you want to actually see what you came here for.

The Three to Four Day Rush

If you have four days, you are essentially looking at a 'Srinagar plus one' trip. This allows for a day in the city, exploring the Mughal Gardens and the Old City, followed by a day trip to Gulmarg or Pahalgam. It is tight, but it works if you prioritize specific experiences.

Expect a lot of time in the car. If you spend your first day recovering from flights and your last day leaving early, you only have two full days of activity. I generally suggest this only for those who are restricted by rigid work schedules or are adding Kashmir onto a larger Indian tour.

The Classic Seven Day Itinerary

A week is the sweet spot. It gives you enough time to move between hubs without feeling like you are constantly repacking your suitcase. You can spend two nights in Srinagar, two in Gulmarg for the snow, and two in Pahalgam or Sonamarg for the river views.

With seven days, you stop seeing the valley as a series of photo ops and start finding your favourite corners. You might find a shop in Srinagar where you spend two hours over kahwa, or a specific trail in the Lidder Valley you want to walk a second time.

Extended Stays for Offbeat Exploration

Ten days or more open up the possibility of Gurez or Doodhpathri. Most people stick to the main tourist circuit, but the real character of the region lives in the valleys further removed from the highway. These are places where you aren't fighting for a spot to park the car.

If you are into photography or trekking, ten days is the absolute minimum. It allows for rest days, which are crucial when dealing with varying altitudes and long, winding drives that can exhaust even the most experienced travellers.

Factors Influencing Your Travel Time

Weather is the silent partner in your itinerary planning. In winter, snow can close the road to Gulmarg or delay flights into Srinagar. In spring, unexpected rain might wash out a day of trekking. Always build in a 20% 'buffer' in your timeline.

Consider your travel pace. Are you the type who needs a slow morning with coffee, or are you up at 6:00 AM ready to head into the mountains? Your energy levels determine whether you can handle the six-hour drives between regions comfortably.

Designing a Flexible Itinerary

Don't book every hour in advance. I advise our clients to pick one 'must-do' activity for each day and leave the rest of the time open. If you end up loving the view from your houseboat, you should have the freedom to stay there all afternoon instead of rushing to a garden.

Look at our destinations page to see which regions align with your interests. Some people prefer the quiet of the forests, while others want the alpine slopes. You don't need to do everything on your first trip.

Before you book

The duration you choose should match the depth of experience you want. A quick trip is a glimpse, but a longer stay allows for a genuine connection with the landscape.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Can I see everything in 5 days?

You can see the main highlights like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, but it will be a fast-paced trip. You will spend a significant portion of your time driving between these locations rather than exploring them.

Is 3 days enough for Kashmir?

It is very short. You will likely be limited to Srinagar and one nearby excursion. If you are flying in and out of Srinagar, you can make it work, but you will miss the scale of the landscape.
