I remember my first independent trip to the valley, where I quickly learned that the cost of a Kashmir trip is rarely just about the tour package. You have the hidden costs—the extra cups of kahwa, the pony ride negotiations, and the fluctuating price of a taxi in high season.
It is easy to get overwhelmed by conflicting quotes online. This guide aims to clear the noise and help you understand exactly where your money goes when you visit our home.
Average Daily Costs for Travellers
For a mid-range traveller, you should budget between 5,000 and 8,000 INR per day, per person. This covers a clean hotel, a private cab for your daily sightseeing, and decent meals.
If you are solo, costs can spike because you cannot split the taxi fare. Taxis are the biggest fixed expense in your budget, as we don't have a robust public transit system between the major tourist towns.

Budget, Mid-Range, and Luxury Options
Budget travellers can get by on 3,000 to 4,000 INR per day if they use shared cabs and stay in homestays. It is a more authentic, albeit less private, way to see the region.
Luxury, on the other hand, is limitless. Staying at premier resorts in Gulmarg or high-end houseboats on Nigeen Lake will push your daily spend to 20,000 INR and above. It really depends on the level of service you expect.

Transport Expenses in the Valley
Taxis are your primary mode of transport. A private cab for a standard Srinagar-Gulmarg return trip will cost between 3,500 and 5,000 INR depending on the car type and season.
Always verify if your package includes toll taxes and parking fees. These 'minor' charges can add 10-15% to your transport budget if you haven't accounted for them upfront.
Dining and Activity Costs
Food is relatively affordable. You can have a hearty wazwan meal for about 800 to 1,200 INR. If you stick to local street food like roth or noon chai, you'll spend pennies.
Activities like gondola rides in Gulmarg are fixed price, costing roughly 740 to 950 INR per person per phase. Pony rides, however, are notoriously variable. Always agree on the price before you get into the saddle.

Tips for Saving Money in Kashmir
The best way to save is to avoid the peak tourist months of May and June. If you visit in early March or November, hotel prices often drop by 30%.
Another tip: book your transport in advance with a single operator rather than hiring random cabs daily. You get better rates, and you avoid the daily negotiation dance that wastes hours of your vacation.

Before you book
The cost of a Kashmir trip is what you make of it. Whether you choose a simple guesthouse or a grand hotel, the mountains look the same. Prioritize your budget on experiences rather than amenities if you are watching your spending.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
Does a tour package include flights?
Generally, no. Most tour operators, including us, provide ground packages. You will need to book your flights separately, which can vary significantly depending on when you travel.
Is it cheaper to hire a car locally?
It might seem cheaper, but local drivers often charge premium rates to walk-in clients. Pre-booking a car with a set itinerary is usually more cost-effective and reliable.
