How Many Days Do You Need for a Perfect Kashmir Trip?
Planning your valley escape
Struggling to decide on your holiday length? We break down the exact days required for a Kashmir trip based on your travel style.

I once watched a traveller try to 'do' Kashmir in three days, spending most of his time looking at the back of a taxi seat. He arrived in Srinagar at noon, rushed to Gulmarg by three, and was back in a hotel by dark. He saw nothing but the road and a few souvenir shops.
You don't want that experience. When calculating the days required for a Kashmir trip, the biggest mistake is overestimating how fast you can travel on our winding mountain roads. Here is how to plan your duration properly.
Why Trip Duration Varies by Interest
The geography of Kashmir is deceptive on a map. Srinagar to Pahalgam looks like a short drive, but traffic in the peak summer months can turn a three-hour journey into five. Your duration should reflect whether you want to see the main hubs or hike the high-altitude meadows.
If you prefer a slow pace, you need more time. A 'do it all' list is exhausting. Decide if you want to settle into a houseboat on Dal Lake for two days of stillness, or if you prefer to be on the move every morning.

A 5-Day Express Kashmir Itinerary
Five days is the absolute minimum I recommend to anyone visiting. It allows for a brief introduction to the valley's rhythm without feeling like you are constantly packing your suitcase.
Spend your first two nights in Srinagar, exploring the Mughal gardens and a sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake. Use day three for a day trip to Gulmarg. Dedicate day four to the drive toward Pahalgam. Return to Srinagar on day five for your flight.
- Srinagar: 2 nights
- Gulmarg: 1 night
- Pahalgam: 1 night
- Departure: Day 5

The Ideal 7-Day Comprehensive Tour
Seven days is the sweet spot. It provides enough time to actually visit the places you hear about without the stress of constant transition. You get a full day to adjust to the altitude in Srinagar and an extra day to explore the Lidder Valley.
With a week, you can spend two nights in Pahalgam, which is impossible on a five-day schedule. This gives you time to hike toward Aru Valley or Betaab Valley without rushing back to the car.

When to Extend to 10+ Days for Ladakh
If you plan to include Ladakh, you need at least ten days. The road journey from Srinagar to Leh is an experience in itself, but it takes two full days of driving through the high mountain passes.
Don't try to cram Ladakh into a week. The altitude in Leh demands at least 24 hours of rest upon arrival. Rushing this will only lead to sickness and fatigue, ruining the second half of your trip.

Balancing Relaxation and Adventure
Think about what restores your energy. Some clients love the bustle of Srinagar markets; others prefer the absolute silence of the forests in Yusmarg. If you build in a 'rest day' every three days, your trip will feel twice as long.
The days required for a Kashmir trip are also affected by the season. In winter, heavy snow can close passes for hours, forcing you to stay in one place. Always build a buffer day into your itinerary.

Before you book
Ultimately, the number of days you choose depends on your pace. Do not try to win a race across the valley. It is far better to see two places properly than to see five places through a windshield.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
Can I visit Kashmir in 4 days?
Technically, yes, but you will spend most of your time in a car. I suggest extending to at least 5 or 6 days to truly experience the culture and scenery without burnout.
Is 7 days enough for both Kashmir and Ladakh?
No. You need at least 10 days to cover both regions comfortably. The travel time between Srinagar and Leh alone consumes two full days of your itinerary.
