If you look at the map, Zanskar appears close to Leh, but map distances in the Himalayas are a dangerous lie. The real metric here is time—and specifically, the time it takes to navigate some of the most challenging, beautiful road stretches in the country.
To answer the question of how far is Zanskar valley from Leh, you are looking at a distance of approximately 450 to 500 kilometres depending on the route. However, this is not a six-hour drive. It is a journey that requires careful planning, patience, and a vehicle capable of handling mountain passes.
Distance and Typical Driving Time
The drive from Leh to Padum takes roughly 12 to 14 hours of pure driving time, but you should never attempt this in one day. We always advise our clients to break the journey. Stopping in Kargil or even further along the new road via the Shinku La pass allows you to acclimatize and enjoy the scenery.
The road is not just a road. It is a high-altitude experience that climbs over significant passes. The physical distance might seem manageable on paper, but the average speed is rarely above 30 km/h due to road work and the nature of the terrain.

The Route Through the Mountains
The traditional route takes you from Leh to Kargil and then into the Zanskar Valley. This is a well-traveled path, but it is long. You pass through [Lamayuru](/destinations/ladakh/lamayuru) and wind through the lunar landscapes that make this part of Ladakh so famous.
The newer route via the Shinku La pass is changing accessibility significantly. It is shorter in distance but offers its own set of challenges regarding altitude and road conditions. Whichever route you choose, ensure your vehicle is checked for brakes and cooling systems before departing.

When the Road is Accessible
Zanskar is seasonally isolated. The peak season runs from July to September. This is when the roads are generally clear of snow and the mountain passes are safe to traverse.
Outside of this window, you are at the mercy of the weather. Early June can see late snow, and by late September, the first winter storms often begin to block the high passes. If you are travelling in the shoulder season, always check the status of the road with local authorities before you leave Leh.

Planning Your Journey for Comfort
Don't rush this trip. The temptation is to get to Zanskar quickly, but you will miss the entire point of the journey. Stop at the monasteries, walk by the rivers, and give your body time to adjust to the elevation.
Hire a driver who knows these roads. Driving in Zanskar is not like driving on highways. It requires specific knowledge of how to handle landslides, narrow passing zones, and sudden weather changes. Our team in [Kargil](/destinations/ladakh/kargil) and Leh can help organize reliable transport for this exact route.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
Can I drive to Zanskar in a small car?
While it is possible in some sections, we strongly recommend a sturdy 4x4 or an SUV with high ground clearance. The road conditions can be unpredictable, and ground clearance is essential.
Is the road from Leh to Zanskar open in winter?
Generally, no. The high passes close due to heavy snowfall. The only way to access Zanskar in winter is the frozen Zanskar River, known as the Chadar Trek.
