I have often sat in the cafés along the Sonmarg road, watching visitors arrive in a flurry of excitement, unsure of exactly how to bridge the distance between the highway and the high-altitude ice of Thajiwas.

The connection between Sonmarg and the glacier is straightforward, but it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the local activity. To reach thajiwas glacier from sonmarg, you don't need a complex plan, just an understanding of the local flow.

Whether you are planning to walk the entire way or use local transport, the journey takes you from the bustling base of the valley up into the quiet, thin air of the peaks. Here is how we usually navigate the route for our guests.

The Walking Route from Sonmarg

The walk starts near the main tourist taxi stand area. From there, you follow the well-trodden paths that wind their way through the local meadows. You are essentially following the valley upward, keeping the glacial stream to your side. It is hard to get lost—most trails funnel toward the same point at the base of the mountains.

The first section is the gentlest, crossing through grassy clearings where local shepherds often have their camps. As you ascend, the path steepens, and the ground becomes more uneven. You will know you are getting close when the sound of the stream grows louder and the air temperature drops significantly.

Alternatives to Walking

If you aren't keen on a 3-kilometre uphill hike, the local pony system is the primary alternative. You will see these horses and their handlers everywhere at the entry point of the trail. It is a traditional way to ascend, and it allows you to cover the distance in about 45 minutes to an hour.

Be aware that the ponies go as far as the designated 'base station' near the glacier. From that point, you still have a small, final stretch to walk to get right up to the ice. It is worth confirming the price and the return timing with the handler clearly before you start.

Best Time to Start Your Journey

I always recommend leaving your hotel in Sonmarg by 8:00 AM. This gives you the advantage of being on the trail before the afternoon crowds arrive. Sonmarg can get busy with day-trippers from Srinagar during the mid-morning hours, so having an early start ensures your walk up is peaceful and unhurried.

Also, the mountain weather patterns often see clouds rolling in by mid-afternoon. If you start early, you are back down in the valley before any potential afternoon showers or changes in visibility occur.

Safety Considerations

The biggest safety risk is usually not the terrain, but the altitude. If you have just arrived from a lower elevation, take it easy. Don't feel pressured to walk fast. If you feel dizzy or find yourself gasping for air, sit down for ten minutes and have some water.

Sun safety is another factor. The sun at 3,000 metres is intense, even if the temperature is cool. Wear a hat and apply sunscreen before you leave your room. You might not feel the burn while you are walking, but you will certainly notice it later.

What to Bring for Your Trek

Pack light, but pack smart. A small daypack with a reusable water bottle, a high-energy snack, and a light windbreaker or fleece is all you need. Do not rely on finding shops once you leave the Sonmarg settlement—it is a wild area, and you are better off being self-sufficient.

Finally, keep your phone in your pocket and out of your hands as much as possible. This is a place to observe. Take your photos, but remember that the experience of the valley is much deeper when you aren't looking at it through a screen.

Before you book

Reaching the glacier is the primary goal of any visit to Sonmarg, but the real value is in the transit—the changing air, the shift from valley floor to mountain peak, and the quiet rhythm of the climb. It is a straightforward trip that rewards you the moment you arrive.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Can I drive a car to the glacier?

No, there is no road for private vehicles to the glacier itself. All transport must stop at the starting point in Sonmarg.

How do I find a reputable pony wallah?

There is a standard rate board at the entrance. Stick to official stands and always confirm the price for a round trip.

Is the path well-marked?

There are no official signs, but the path is worn deep into the grass by years of foot traffic. Just follow the main trail.

Should I bring cash?

Definitely. There are no ATMs on the mountain, and small expenses like tea or pony rides are strictly cash-based.

Can I visit Manasbal Lake on the same day?

It is better to visit Manasbal Lake on a separate day. Combining it with the glacier trek makes for an exhausting schedule.
