The first time I took the road south from Srinagar, the familiar noise of the city fell away abruptly at the threshold of the Anantnag district, replaced by the persistent sound of water rushing through irrigation canals.
Most visitors follow a well-trodden loop, but this 5-day kashmir itinerary invites you to do something different. We focus on the southern heritage circuit—the Mughal springs, the alpine meadows of Daksum, and the quiet orchards that define the rural character of this region. It is a slower pace, one that requires a bit more patience with winding roads, but rewards you with a side of the valley that feels largely untouched by the modern rush.
Day 1: Arrival and Srinagar Heritage
Arrive at Srinagar International Airport by midday. Instead of rushing toward the houseboats on Dal Lake, spend your first afternoon adjusting to the altitude and the light. Srinagar is best understood from the top of Shankaracharya Hill or by walking through the quiet lanes of the Old City.
I always suggest clients spend their first evening at the Hazratbal Shrine as the sun hits the water. It sets a reflective tone for the trip. Dine at a local spot in the city centre to get your bearings before the travel south begins tomorrow.

Day 2: The Gardens of South Kashmir
Leave Srinagar early, ideally by 8:00 AM, to beat the heavy traffic in Pampore. Your destination is the historic garden of Achabal. Unlike the sprawling gardens in the city, Achabal retains a sense of seclusion. The water here is icy cold, emerging directly from the mountain base.
After lunch in Anantnag town, continue to the trout hatcheries near the area. It is a fascinating look at the local industry. Spend the afternoon wandering the terraced paths of the garden before heading to your base in Kokernag for the night.

Day 3: Exploring Verinag and its Surroundings
Verinag is the source of the Jhelum River, and its octagonal pool remains one of the most stunning examples of Mughal architecture in the region. The deep blue water is mesmerizing. Spend the morning here, away from the midday heat.
The afternoon is best spent in the surrounding apple orchards. If you are visiting in the harvest season, the scent of fruit is everywhere. This is a day for slow movement and photography, as the light shifts beautifully across the stone archways of the spring.

Day 4: Nature Walks in Daksum
Drive into the heart of the mountains towards Daksum. This is a dramatic change of scenery from the valley floor. The road winds through dense forests and eventually opens into a high-altitude meadow.
There is no better place for a long, quiet walk. We often arrange a picnic here because there are few restaurants, just the sound of the stream. It is a wild, rugged contrast to the manicured gardens visited earlier in the week.

Day 5: Returning to Srinagar via Local Villages
On your final day, take the secondary roads back to Srinagar. The main highway is faster, but the village routes provide a glimpse into rural Kashmiri life. You will pass through small hamlets where traditional timber and mud houses are still common.
Stop at a roadside tea stall for a cup of noon chai before reaching the airport. It is a quiet, contemplative end to the trip, ensuring you leave with a sense of place that isn't just about the tourist landmarks.

Before you book
South Kashmir offers a different rhythm. It is a place where you stop for the view, not for the itinerary, and where the history is etched into the very water that feeds the valley.

Yes, 5 days is perfect for a focused trip to the south. You can comfortably cover the main heritage springs and reach the high-altitude areas like Daksum without feeling rushed.
What is the best way to travel between these towns?
Hiring a private taxi for the duration of the trip is the most reliable method. It allows you to set your own pace and pull over for the many spontaneous photo opportunities.
