I have spent many mornings shivering on the banks of the Lidder River, waiting for the water to warm up enough for our first rafting group of the day. There is nothing quite like being on the water here. The glacial chill of the river mixed with the intense summer sun is the highlight for most of our clients. But if you have to spend an hour commuting from the town centre to get to the rafting initiation point, you’ve already lost the best part of the morning energy.

Staying close to the water changes the entire dynamic of your trip. You can hear the river from your window, and the commute to the rafting starting point becomes a five-minute walk rather than a thirty-minute taxi ride. Here is how to pick the right spot.

The best locations for river access

The main rafting points on the Lidder River are generally concentrated between Varganpal and Yargalkuth. If you want to be within walking distance of these points, you need to focus on hotels located in the Laripora or the lower Pahalgam valley sections.

Staying in these areas gives you an immediate advantage. You can check the river conditions right from your hotel balcony. When the water level is perfect, you can be in the raft within twenty minutes of finishing breakfast. This avoids the mid-day rush when the crowds arrive from Srinagar.

  • Laripora area: Best for direct river access.
  • Lower Pahalgam: A balance between town amenities and water access.
  • Varganpal vicinity: Ideal for serious rafters looking for proximity.

Benefits of staying near the Lidder

The biggest benefit is time. In Kashmir, travel times can be deceptive. A short distance on a map can take an hour in traffic. Staying near the river means you spend more time in the water and less time in a car.

You also get to enjoy the sound of the river, which is genuinely relaxing. Many of the properties near the river have gardens that lead directly down to the water, providing a private spot to relax after a long day of adventure. It’s a completely different atmosphere from the busy market hotels.

Matching your hotel to your activity level

If you are here primarily for rafting and trekking, prioritize a hotel with a functional 'mud room' or storage area. You will be dealing with damp gear and sandy boots. Properties that cater to adventure travellers are used to this, whereas more upscale, carpeted boutique hotels might frown upon it.

Consider the physical access. Some riverside hotels require a steep descent or a climb to reach. If you have any mobility concerns or are travelling with young children, check the path accessibility before confirming. We often help clients choose based on their specific fitness level to ensure the stay remains enjoyable.

What to look for in riverside accommodation

Look for large windows. The view of the Lidder River is the main reason you are choosing this location. If the hotel design doesn't take advantage of that, you might as well stay in the town centre.

Check the proximity to the road. While you want to be close to the river, being too far down the bank can make access to local taxis difficult. Aim for a property that is a short stroll from the main road but enjoys a quiet riverfront position. This is the sweet spot for a relaxing stay.

Planning your daily itinerary from your hotel

Once you are settled, base your excursions around the rafting schedule. Do your rafting in the early morning when the water is calmer and the light for photography is at its best. In the afternoon, you can head out to [Aru Valley](/destinations/kashmir/aru-valley) or explore the local meadows.

If you need help coordinating transfers to [Betaab Valley](/destinations/kashmir/betaab-valley) or [Chandanwari](/destinations/kashmir/chandanwari), we can arrange pickups directly from your hotel. This ensures you aren't waiting around, and your driver knows exactly where you are located.
