The first time I stood by the Lidder River in June, the water was so clear it looked like liquid glass against the grey, sun-warmed rocks. It is that specific sharpness in the air that defines this month.

June marks the transition from the frantic thaw of spring to the stable, sun-drenched days of full summer. While much of the plains are sweltering, Pahalgam remains a pocket of manageable cool, where your morning coffee is best enjoyed while wearing a light fleece.

If you are looking for things to do in Pahalgam in June, you are timing your visit exactly right for high-altitude access. The mountain passes are beginning to clear, and the grass in the meadows is deep, vibrant green. Here is how to spend your time once you arrive.

Why visit Pahalgam in early summer

June is the sweet spot for a Kashmir itinerary. You avoid the heavy monsoon rains that can affect other parts of India, and you miss the crowds that typically arrive in July and August. The weather usually hovers between 12°C and 25°C, making it ideal for walking without the exhaustion of heat.

We often advise our clients to head here early in the season to catch the wildflowers in the higher reaches. It is a time of renewal. If you prefer quiet mornings by the river over busy tourist spots, this is your window.

Trout fishing on the Lidder River

The Lidder is more than a river; it is the lifeblood of this town. By June, the snowmelt has settled, leaving the water levels perfect for fishing. Brown and Rainbow trout thrive in these frigid, oxygenated flows.

You will need a permit from the Fisheries Department in Srinagar or the local office in Pahalgam. We recommend heading out early, around 6:00 AM, when the light hits the valley floor and the fish are most active. Even if you do not catch anything, the act of standing in those waders, listening to the rushing water, is the best kind of meditation.

Exploring Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari

These three spots form the backbone of any Pahalgam tour. They can get busy by midday, so plan accordingly. If you drive to Aru Valley, try to get there before 9:00 AM to see the village waking up and the horses heading out to pasture.

Betaab Valley is famously photogenic, but the real magic is found by walking further into the meadows away from the main entrance. Chandanwari is the starting point for the Amarnath Yatra and the gateway to high-altitude treks. In June, the road is open, and the scale of the surrounding peaks is truly humbling.

  • Aru Valley: Ideal for quiet nature walks.
  • Betaab Valley: Excellent for riverside picnics.
  • Chandanwari: The dramatic gateway to glacial terrain.

Hiking and pony rides to Baisaran

Baisaran is often called 'Mini Switzerland' by the tourist boards, a label I think does it a disservice. It is a stunning, high-altitude meadow framed by dense pine forests. You can reach it by a steep, hour-long trek or by pony.

If you are reasonably fit, I suggest walking. You will find small, hidden clearings along the path that the ponies bypass. Once at the top, the view of the valley below is expansive. It is one of the most rewarding things to do in Pahalgam in June, especially when you catch a breeze coming off the glaciers.

Tips for comfortable summer travel

Bring layers. I cannot stress this enough. Even in June, a sudden cloud cover or a stiff breeze can drop the temperature significantly. Carry a light windbreaker and a pair of sturdy walking shoes.

Also, respect the local environment. Pack your trash out, especially on the trails to Baisaran. Tourism is growing, and we want to keep these meadows green for years to come. If you have questions about specific permits or need help arranging a driver, get in touch with our team in Srinagar.
