When you reach the top of the road at Nathatop, the world seems to suddenly drop away on three sides. It is the highest point in the immediate vicinity of Patnitop, and on a clear day, the air is sharp enough that you can count the ridges of the Pir Panjal range stretching into the distance.
Many travellers drive through it on their way to Sanasar without stopping, which is a mistake. Whether you are chasing the first snow of the year or just want a place to sit and watch the clouds shift, here is how to make the most of your time at the top.
Capturing the Pir Panjal Panorama
The primary reason to come here is the view. It’s an unobstructed 360-degree panorama. I have sat here for hours just watching the light move across the peaks.
For the best photos, get here early. The morning light hits the eastern faces of the mountains, creating deep shadows that make the range look massive. By mid-afternoon, the haze often rolls in, which is moody but hides the distant summits.

Winter Sports and Snow Play
When the winter snow settles on the ridge, Nathatop becomes the go-to spot for locals. It’s not a formal ski resort, so don't expect chairlifts or groomed runs.
Instead, you get sledding, snowball fights, and the chance to walk through waist-deep powder. It is raw, authentic, and a great way to spend a cold morning.

Walking the Ridge Line
There is no set 'trail' in the sense of a marked park path, but the ridge itself invites walking. You can stroll along the top for a kilometre or two in either direction.
Keep your eyes on the weather. Because you are exposed, a breeze can turn into a gale very quickly. I always carry a windproof shell in my bag, even in summer.

Photographing the Sunset
If you stay until the sun dips, you will see the valley below turn purple. It is a quiet time, as most day-trippers have already headed back down toward Patnitop or toward the main highway.
The temperature drops fast once the light goes. Pack a thermos of tea, find a spot away from the road, and wait for the stars to start appearing.

Combining Nathatop with Sanasar
Most visitors combine this with a trip to Sanasar. Since you are already up here, it only makes sense to continue the drive to the lake.
I suggest doing Nathatop in the early morning for the light, then spending your afternoon in the meadows of Sanasar. It makes for a complete, well-paced day.

Before you book
Nathatop is one of those places that rewards the people who actually step out of their cars. It isn't a place with a long list of formal activities, but it is a place for looking, for breathing, and for feeling the scale of the Jammu mountains.
If you are planning your itinerary through the region, make sure you leave a few hours to just stand on this ridge. Need help coordinating your travel through Patnitop and beyond? Let us know.

Quick answers
Questions we get asked
How far is Nathatop from Patnitop?
It is roughly a 10 to 12-kilometre drive from the main tourist centre in Patnitop. The road is steep and climbs steadily as you move toward the peak.
Is there anything to eat at the top?
You will find a few small shacks selling tea, Maggi, and basic snacks. Do not expect full restaurants; it is a very rustic and informal setup.
Do I need a permit to visit?
No permits are required for Indian citizens. Just drive or take a taxi up to the ridge. If you are a foreign national, always carry your passport and visa, as there may be security checkpoints on the wider Jammu highways.
Can I reach Nathatop by public bus?
It is very difficult. Public buses are rare on this stretch. It is highly recommended to hire a taxi from Patnitop or your hotel for the duration of the trip to ensure you aren't stranded.
Is it better than Patnitop for views?
Yes. While Patnitop is a lovely base, Nathatop is significantly higher, meaning your view of the surrounding mountain ranges is much broader and more impressive.
