The road to Lamayuru is one of the most surreal drives I have ever taken, specifically the section known as 'Moonland,' where the earth looks like it has been sculpted by giants. Knowing how to reach lamayuru is essential, because while the destination is iconic, the transport options vary significantly in comfort and cost.

Whether you are planning to rent a bike, hire a local driver, or take the public bus, the journey itself is a major part of the experience. It winds through the Indus valley, past centuries-old stupas and dramatic mountain passes. Here is how you can get there with the least amount of fuss.

Travelling from Leh to Lamayuru

Lamayuru sits roughly 125 kilometres west of Leh. Most people cover this distance in a single day, either as a day trip or as part of a longer road trip towards Kargil or Srinagar. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours depending on how many times you stop—and trust me, you will want to stop often.

The road is paved but can be narrow in stretches. Expect to pass Magnetic Hill and the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers along the way. These are essential photo stops, so factor them into your travel time.

Driving the Srinagar-Leh Highway

If you are arriving from Srinagar, you will hit Lamayuru long before you reach Leh. This is the main artery of the region. The road crosses the Fotu La pass, which is the highest point on the Srinagar-Leh highway at over 4,100 metres.

Driving this stretch requires caution. The mountain weather is unpredictable, and road conditions can change after a heavy rain or snow. Always check for local road updates at the traffic police office in Kargil or Leh before setting off.

Public Bus Services and Schedules

For the budget-conscious traveller, the public bus from Leh is the way to go. Buses depart from the main Leh bus stand, usually early in the morning, around 6:00 or 7:00 AM. It is a slow, bumpy ride, but it provides a window into the daily life of the locals who use this service to travel between villages.

Note that the bus schedule can be irregular. Arrive at the station at least 30 minutes early to secure a seat. You won't find advanced online booking for these buses; it is strictly a 'show up and hope' system.

Hiring Private Taxis

Hiring a private taxi is the most comfortable way to see the route. You have the flexibility to pull over whenever you see a photo opportunity, and you don't have to worry about missing the bus. You can arrange these through your hotel in Leh or at the taxi stand.

Expect to pay a fixed rate based on the Leh taxi union's current tariff. It is common practice to book a round-trip or a transfer if you are continuing towards Srinagar. This gives you peace of mind knowing your transport is sorted for the next leg.

Travel Tips for the Journey

Regardless of how you travel, carry snacks and plenty of water. The road to Lamayuru has few reliable restaurants, and a breakdown or a traffic delay is always a possibility in the mountains.

Bring a good jacket. The wind at the high passes is fierce, even in the middle of summer. If you are prone to motion sickness, take your preferred medication an hour before leaving Leh—the road is exceptionally winding.

Before you book

Getting to Lamayuru is a lesson in patience and appreciation. The landscape changes every few miles, and the effort of navigating the mountain roads is rewarded the moment the monastery comes into view on the hillside.

Whether you take the bus with the locals or choose the convenience of a private driver, enjoy the road. It is one of the most stunning drives in India, and the destination is well worth every hour spent in transit.
