The first time I climbed the stone steps toward the main gate of the fort, the morning air was still holding the chill of the Tawi River valley. Bahu Fort isn't just a relic; it is an active, living piece of Jammu’s identity. Many visitors arrive expecting a solitary monument, but they find a sprawling complex that stretches from the ancient bastions down to the meticulously manicured lawns of the botanical gardens.

Understanding the geography of the site is essential before you lace up your boots. The transition between the historic structure and the modern terraced gardens—collectively known as the bahu fort and bagh-e-bahu complex—requires a bit of strategy to avoid unnecessary climbing during the heat of the day.

Understanding the Complex Layout

The site is divided into two primary sections: the upper fort area, which houses the Bawe Wali Mata temple, and the lower gardens, or Bagh-e-Bahu. The temple draws a steady stream of locals, particularly on Tuesdays and Sundays, which can make the narrow entry lanes feel quite crowded.

Once you pass the main gate, the layout funnels you naturally toward the temple courtyard. The fort itself occupies the high ground, providing a vantage point over the city. It is a strategic position, and once you stand on the ramparts, it becomes clear why the Dogra rulers kept their eyes on this river bend for centuries.

The Path from the Fort to the Gardens

The walk from the fort exit to the entrance of Bagh-e-Bahu is roughly 500 to 700 metres, depending on which gate you exit. Most visitors take the paved route that winds down the hillside. It is a downhill walk that takes about ten minutes, but keep in mind that returning to the main road requires a taxi or a determined uphill trek.

If you are short on time, local auto-rickshaws are frequently idling near the fort exit. The distance is short, and you shouldn't pay more than 50 to 100 rupees for the short hop between the two entrances.

Walking Accessibility and Terrain

While the gardens are relatively flat, the fort area is composed of uneven, weathered stone stairs and steep walkways. If you are travelling with family members who have mobility issues, focus your time on the lower gardens where the pathways are wider and more level.

Wear shoes with good grip. The stone surfaces in the older sections of the fort can become slippery if there is any morning dew or humidity. We often advise clients to reserve at least three hours to cover both areas without feeling like they are rushing.

Combining Your Visit with Raghunath Temple

Many travelers attempt to group their trip with a visit to the Raghunath Temple. While both are essential Jammu sites, they are on opposite sides of the river. You should plan for a 20-minute drive between the two in local traffic.

I recommend visiting the fort first, then heading to the city centre for lunch, and finishing your afternoon at the temple. You can learn more about our [Raghunath Temple](/destinations/jammu/raghunath-temple) tours if you want a local guide to manage the transit.

Top Highlights within the Grounds

Don’t miss the aquarium located inside the Bagh-e-Bahu complex. It is shaped like a fish and is surprisingly well-maintained, offering a cooling respite from the sun. The walk through the terraced gardens themselves offers the best views of the Tawi River snaking through the landscape below.

If you want to see the fort walls in their best light, position yourself on the eastern lawn of the garden around 4:00 PM. The soft sunlight hits the fortress stone, turning the grey walls a warm, golden hue.

Before you book

Exploring this historic corner of Jammu offers a quiet reflection on the region's long history. The combination of the raw, weathered stone of the fortress and the refined landscaping of the gardens provides a balanced day out that captures both the grit and beauty of the city.

Quick answers

Questions we get asked

Is there an entry fee for the fort or gardens?

Yes, there is a nominal entry fee for both the fort area and the gardens, usually ranging between 20 to 50 rupees for adults. Check the latest signs at the main gate, as these can occasionally shift per local policy.

Can I reach the fort via public transport?

While local buses pass near the base of the hill, they are often crowded. Hiring an auto-rickshaw from your hotel or the city center is the most reliable and convenient way to reach the entrance gates comfortably.
